Yamaha 150 20 hour break in

Just did my first oil change at 20 hours on my new Yamaha F150's.
Oil seemed pretty dark and dirty for 20 hours. Followed the recommended break in procedure. Is this normal?

There's lots of threads on The Hull Truth about the Yamaha recommended break-in procedure being not-so-great. Suggestions include more heavy acceleration to help the rings get seated (vs the gentle Yamaha procedure)

I didn't baby it. Up to 2000 RPM the first hour then pretty much normal after that except no WOT for the first 10 hours. Runs great

I don’t know why they spec the first oil change at 20 hours. In my opinion that’s way too long. The most amount of wear an engine will ever see is during the first few hours of break-in. I always cut my oil filters open to inspect how much debris is in them that may indicate a problem. Take your oil catch pan out into the sun or shine a flashlight into the oil from your first change, it is filled with metallic flecks from the rings seating in the bore. I did my new Yamaha 300 at 5 hours, incredible the amount of crap that remained in the crankcase that wasn’t being caught by the filter.

Break them in hard, that’s my two cents.

Just want to know if it's supposed to be dark like old oil after 20 hours.
Runs great with no smoke.
I'm sure the rings have seated properly.

All my 4 stroke outboards have had black oil at 100 hour changes.
I questioned it as well, but apparently it's normal.

Me too but this was only 20 hours. Just thought it would look a little fresher.

Engine oil goes black very quickly - totally normal.

I maintain our family ski boat and it gets max 10-20hrs between annual oil changes - the oil is always black, same as the oil in my truck after 5000km. Oil doesn't stay golden/honey. People are free to break in any way they like, but if you follow the factory procedure at least you should be covered by warranty.

My outboards get changed annually and the oil is still a dark honey color, not black at all
