winter

hello all I have an 1851 stripper with a 115 Yamaha was wondering if I can still use it all winter or am I better off putting it away for the year. would still like to fish thou. whut to do ?

I never put away my boat. There can be great winter fisheries. Feeder springs, crabs, prawning etc..... Calm sunny days on the water with no one else around is such a nice day.

There is of course a joke in here somewhere about your "stripper" being pretty old to use her ANY time of the year.

Used to have the exact same boat -- Striper 1851 hull and with the Yamaha 115hp engine. I used it all year but partially winterized. You'll want to put some anti-freeze in the water tank if you store it on the hard -- and drain the port-a-potty. Otherwise, I used it all year long. Make sure you keep the leg down when storing it so any water trapped inside can drain out.

Newfisherman....If using it during the winter I would start it every 2 weeks or so if you are not using it during that period and put some fuel stablizer in your tank as well.

I never really put her to bed in the winter. Too much fun prawning and crabbing. I might give the winter springs some more attention this year as our summer season was quite short this year. Like others have said about running her once in a while between trips and definately using some fuel treatment. I like that seafoam stuff and have been using it alot this year. Another thing I like to do is keep a small heater going on low in the cabin to keep things nice and dry. Go for it and get out there with your boat!!!

It is so mild usually around here in Western BC that you should be able to get out on the water most of the winter. There are a few winters that are an exception like the one from 2008 (hell froze over).
