Wicked Tuna???

Well I like it....Its totally an opinion thing just like the posts on the other fishing show... If everyone liked the same thing it would be boring TV and like living in the matrix with Mr. Anderson.
Haa haa.... like the reference Mr. Anderson :)

I was given the first two seasons of Wicked Tuna from a friend at work, seems like they haven't caught a real big one since the first season, pretty cool seeing them hook the big one and chase it down with the boat, all the ones they let go are bigger then the Albacore tuna on the westcoast.. . wonder what one of them massive rod n reel combo's is worth:confused:

Something I found a little disturbing on the most recent show I watched was the harpooning of Tuna from an extended bow platform. The were also using a spotter plane to guide them. They nailed two tuna in no time. It seems to me if there trying to protect there numbers then why would they allow such a fishery. I don't know if they have size limits on that particular method but the two fish they caught were pretty small. At least with rod and reel if there small you can release them, not so with just straight harpooning. Just an observation.;) eman

doesn't seem like a fair chance for the fish, you cant hunt game from a helicopter, why should you be able to spot the bluefins from a plane and drive over them and harpoon them...SAD..i noticed in episode 3 he was back to anchoring up like the rest of the fleet. Im sure it get expensive to pay for plane/pilot and boat fuel. I agree with you Seafever, if i could get a chance to go bluefin fishing i would be heading for the airport!

If they have a set allocation of how many they can kill who cares how they kill them? This isn't about fair chase, this is about killing for money!

not to disagree with you guys about the harpooning but this is a tag/quota commercial fishery and not a sport fishery so I don't think they are really too concerned about the fair chance.

This is ferrel hog cull in texas i prosume, they are not hunting them it is a cull as these hogs are a real problem down south and need to be dealt with accordingly. Pretty good shooting tex!

Quota fishery or not, still gives them a better chance to fill the Quota before the end of the season, would much rather watch them battle it out on a rod n reel with them big Bluefin.

I hear you jeffy, but at 5-10,000 per fish, I don't think they really care what you would rather watch :)

The harpooning is one of the main methods for commercially harvesting swordfish. Tuna?? I'll bet the show producer threw that in to liven the show up.

I think so too, the harpoon boat Christina was right back to anchoring up the very next episode, have to see wednesday at 10 pm eastern on geography channel :)

Actually, here is an article about tuna harpooning from 2009. So I guess thjey do use this method. However, I read that harpooning is not possible in rough weather when rod and reel fishers are still out fishing. Makes sense, can you imagine how much 6' waves translate into at the end of that 15'-20' bow sprit? LOL

....new season starts Sun Feb 23 for those needing a tuna fix....

looks like 'pooning will be a bigger part of the show this year. Can't wait to watch the disasters with Bill on the Bounty Releaser....

Yes, i like the fishing action but the way they bad mouth each other and cry cuz some guy's fishing "his spot" seems a little silly. I'm sure it's to glamorize the show but it turns me off a bit.

Agree considering there is like a million boats all in one lil area...chances are someone will eventually be on "your spot" Little different in our area and the coast here though as not nearly as much traffic, I'd go Tuna.com on someone too if they were on my numbers out here :D lolllll

I was a deckhand on a seine boat for a time. In 1992 or 93 we anchored for 3 days on a spot in Johnstone Sraight waiting for the opening. A group of not so friendly Campbell River guys showed up 2 hours before the opening and suggested we move off "their" spot. Words were exchanged, threats involving firearms were made, but we stayed and they corked us a bit but both boats got big first sets of sockeye. Is the Quocksister family still in the fishing business? Big money derby openings make/made people crazy.

I spent time on Quocksister's seiner ffor a couple of days as an observer one season. What an experience that was. Totally abusive manner towards his crew. ( and other boats in his way) Often wondered why he didnt get punched out.

I remember one time after he had been down on the deck berating his crew, him climbing up to the wheelhouse, grinning at me and saying "Ya gotta yell at them like that---- it keeps them on their toes !!" His boat was the one I remember with the most tension, but there were others almost as bad.... I think a lot of it has to do with inexperienced crew now a days. The season for seines is so short that many crew have gone elsewhere to make a living, so the companies and captains sometimes have to take what they can find.

I did a couple of seasons with a skipper who was a bit of a berater and yeller. He had me using the plunge pole off the bow while we were winding back up one time the first season. He hauls butt outta the wheelhouse yelling at me about my level of "enthusiam".
He grabs the plunge pole and starts whacking like a madman. Then it flew out of his hand and plunged it's last plunge! I gave him my best smirky look and off he went. He never replaced that plunge pole and life just got a wee bit easier. We made good money though so I give him props for that!
