Why trebles

Hey guys,

I've noticed that up in B.C most guys are running trebles on their bait rigs.

Down here in Washington, most guys run singles. As a matter of fact,I don't ever recall anyone using a bait rig with anything other than singles.

Is it just a regional thing?

Rys Davis always sold the prerigged head holders with trebles. I think it helps the roll as well. What brand of headholder do you use? I used to have the odd fish flaten my treble hook, so now I fish with 3x strong ones.

Take only what you need.

Ive tried fishing choves with 4/0 singles before but was never able to get the nice drillbit roll like you get with a treble. If I could get it to work a bit better with singles id be all for it...

For one, trebles aren't legal in Washington. Everything has to be single point hooks. I also agree with the others that it's much easier to get that tight perfect roll with the trebles.

They aren't legal now. But isn't that a fairly recent rule change?

Like the last couple years or so? Wasn't it the same time they started requiring barbless for all species?

So what is it about the treble that allows a better spin?

Do you leave two of the points exposed or bury two?

Like every thing else in the state of Washington anything thats effective they ban. I always ran a treble with a trailer before they banned treble hooks. Since switching to singles my hookup to strike ratio has dropped to about 50%.

Trebles are easier to rig,but are tough on immature fish,I find.

When trebles are used the shank of the hook just lays nice and flat against the bait with two hooks exposed. I find that with singles, because of the shape of the octopus hooks, they won't lay flat and it's just more difficult to get that killer roll.

Wonder if you could use a wire rigged teaser head with a single
siwash not buried in the anchovie ?
Similar to the way you run strip.

Hmmm... I believe the ban on trebles in Washington Marine Areas 1-13 was adopted in 2003 and put in effect 2004.

In a study in Idaho in 1979 it was shown that the "hook up", "penetration", and "holding power" of a single hook is better than the treble. Also, the single had less of a mortality rate.

If you use 3/0 single siwash, with a 3/0 trailer you should be able to get the desired roll. Also remember, 90% of the time the trailer is the hook the fish will hit.

Now with all that being said. Down here in WA I use the double 3/0 hook setup with anchovy heads with no problems. I have a very good "hook up" percentage and seldom loose a fish. Most of the time if I get a strike, I get the fish. Now up on WCVI! I still use the trebles. Don't ask me why, but I guess some old habits are hard to change! Maybe its just the fact I can use trebles. But, each year I have several treble points straighten and/or broken and several fish spit the hook? So, as I am typing this... I am asking myself, why do I still insist on using trebles? :D

Just my 2 cents!

I've used double trebles on my hookups. For trolling large cutplug herring it's a #5 single lead and two #6 trebles. For Anchovies it's two #8 trebles. We didn't call them the "Whirling Wings of Death" for nothing. Sorry to expose my "unsportsman" side.

I'll have to look now and see if that's still legal.
