Strongtide Islet and Vantreight Island, with the aerial towers off Oak Bay? are they government, native land or private?

I saw this guy heading out all summer. I watched him head right over to Chatham too one of the coves. I see boaters with no fishing gear or crab traps head over there all summer. This guy has a new zodiac with a new truck with all the decals and a uniform.

Its their land, isnt it? Why is this any different than you chasing off a bunch of teens who want to party on your lawn???

If people didn't disrespect private property and act like dickheads by lighting fires and throwing garbage all over the place perhaps the owners would let people use it.

Simple as that. Native land or not is irrelevant.

according to one of the bylaw officers, the songhees band did not negotiate away its shore rights. The shore is not crown land to high tide like most other islands. The officer I spoke to said that after things are under control and everyone is up to date with the new rules for a while they will likely start allowing people back on the island.

I agree 150% here. People who throw trash around and light fires are despicable, and ruin it for the rest of us!

Yes, the songhees band did say it did not negotiate away its shore rights. But they did not say they ever have them in the first place.

I fail to see the distinction. If they own the land, the regular private island rules regarding high tide line access don't apply, apparently. The guy seemed fairly reasonable. I used to spend a lot of time on Chatham island and I'm sad to see it cut off. Hopefully the rules will be relaxed as he says they will.

Probably will take a court judgement to figure out whether foreshore rights can be exercised. I spend a lot of time around the islands and i have seen some crazy shiiit. Last june I was coming back from Sidney around 10pm and I saw a few lights on Chatham , I decided to check it out and I come across a full stage with lights ,full drum kit, guitarist, and bass player with a smoke machine and about 60 very stoned people dancing!!

I think if people respected the island , especially Chatham, as it is a burial island , there wouldn't be a problem. The Songhees people that I have dealt with are pretty straightforward , show respect , get respect.Unfortunately that is not always the case on the islands.

If you want to spend the night on the islands cruise around to the campground on the south end of Discovery , its like being 100 miles away from Victoria.
