Does anyone have any suggestions on where to take SVOP, Marine basic first aid, Med-A3 and ROC? I know North Van has a location but cant find a location closer to the city center.

take the one in north van, capt jimmy watt teaches what you need to know.

The Power and Sail Squadron will do the ROC-M for $70.00 if you are not a member and $60 if you are a member. That includes the training Book and the Computer disk and they will let you rewrite the exam if you fail which is not likely. This is cheaper than most of the private trainers that I am aware of. Just give them a call to find out which is the closest one to you and give that local a call to register for the next course. Mine was two nights of two to 3 hour classes followed by the exam on the third night and if you pass you get a temp license on the spot till your card is mailed to you. I don't think they do the Med - A3 or the SVOP but you could ask them.

Thanks for reminding me about Power & Sail that's who I took mine with back in '94-good for life!

Congrats Kelly on the idea of getting your courses as lodges are always looking for young and up and coming passionate guides and knowing how to catch fish as you do always helps !!!!!

Cheers

Thanks for the help guys much appreciated. I'll be doing some part time guiding this summer so figured I better get my certs asap.

I wanted to get the roc-m first as I was told you can just challenge the test. Upon researching the only options I can find are two 4 hour classes.

Kelly,

Just challenged the course two weeks ago. Bought the manual from Power Squadron, comes with a disk that helps a lot. Challlenged through Heads Up Navigation in Sidney, $50 bucks. Found if you read the book and do the practice questions on the disk you will not have a problem. No need to take the class, especially if you have used a VHF in the past and have some experience.

Still have the manual and disk if you want them, more than happy to pass them along to someone that needs them.

There is a SVOP coming up in Richmond May 12 thru the 14th. Contact Owen Bird at SFI (604-875-0104)
(For the full guiding training CTAG, also contact Owen)
For MED A2 /A3 contact Marine Training Inst. in North Van .
For ROC-M contact Power Squadron in your area of choice.
For Marine first aid contact St. Johns Ambulance or Canadian Red Cross

Thanks alot bearcove. The friend who challenged the test also wrote his in sidney and has given me his manual/disk. Appreciate the offer though. I will try to see if i can challenge it over here on the mainland or will just bite the bullet at take the course.

Peahead thanks for the heads up on the SVOP and the info on the others! Ill be in contact with Owen asap and see if i can get in on it.

FD did they offer all the courses or just ROC-M? Granville would be ideal as i can get down there in 15 mins. Owen said that the Richmond SVOP had to be cancelled due to low interest.

Thanks Dogbreath

MED-A3....assuming it is the marine first aid? Is there differing levels? I see 2 on St. John's ambulance....but do you need the 40 hour couse for guiding?

Why I included PCOC in my question I don't know....as my card is sitting here on my desk in it's little plastic case with my fishing license. :o

S.V.O.P. = Small Vessel Operator Proficiency
Med A3 = Marine Emergency Duties, Level # 1 of 3

If you have S.V.O.P. you do not require P.C.O.C.
