Hi,

I am looking to have my 13 year old catch something other than small trout and wonder about Pinks near Kitty Coleman (or Coho?). I ahve a 12 ft inflatable with a 15 hp so downriggers, rough water are not an option. Any advice to help make my teen wide eyed would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
DC

The problem you will have when the pinks show up in numbers ( and hopefully coho too) is that it can be extremely frustrating fishing.. especially the coho fishing. Schools of jumping fish all over the place and none biting!!! But then again-- they can REALLY turn on too!

But that being said, there are two places that your inflatable will work fine. The first is the Point Holmes area in Comox. Launch at the ramp ( and remember to pay the $5 fee, the guys need it to maintain the ramp) and fish in 6 to 20 feet along the shore towards the harbour. Give the beach guys some room if you dont want a buzzbomb bouncing off the boat!!![:I]

The second area is along the western shore of the outer Comox harbour.
The center of the action is often off the Kingfisher Resort ( big long building that you cant miss.) Launch at the municiple Comox ramp.

And -- one more. Off the mouth of the Oyster River. Launch at Pacific Playgrounds. But PLEEZE give the beach fishermen room. Too many times a flyfisher will hook a fish and the next thing you know, there are pontoon boats and sfiffs crowding him.

Hope this helps.

Ya-- I didnt include King Coho as there is nowhere to launch near to the fishing area that will give him a quick getaway if the wind picks up suddenly. Also not sure if he wants to pack a 15 horse O/B down the beach at low tide! :D

Thanks!! What would be recommended as far as tackle? Pink / Silver small buzz bombs? Also I may try beach fishing as well and wonder what the best gear and spots are (although your suggestions below serve a a good starting point). In the meantime, I will be looking at maps to pinpoint these locations, and hope the bit of rain has helped! Thanks again,

More tips here.

As far as tackle-- for gear the small buzzbombs and Zzingers in white /grey work for coho when they have a bit of depth under them. Blue and sometimes green works too.

Pinks like anything that is pink! Spinners. hot pink flies etc.

You just have to watch what is working for others and adapt. Good luck

Now that's a great offer from F.A.!
Puts the Sport back in Sportfishing.

That is a very kind offer and trying to "hook up" (pardon the pun) for some fishing when he returns next week. In the meantime, what is the best marine forecast please. Its a bit windy for me and am going to try beach fishing....where are the easiest access points? Thanks tons for all the help:D

I would head to King Coho for beach fishing. Its down by the Comox Ferry. It's the point that is just South East of the ferry term. Fishing the pier in Campbell River can be a blast at this time of year but crowded.

I will take you out Monday depending on the wind, as I am on the west coast this weekend.

As for forcasts check out bigwavedave.ca

Almost one year later and guess who is back in town. Taking dcinbc out this afternoon for his free fishing trip. I hope I can scratch one up for him.

A big thank-you to F.A. from my son and I. We were taken out on the water for a great day fishing. Not only did we have a great time just being out on a beautiful day, we brought in several 'hos that were unclipped and were released. Might even have kept one of those if I had kept my tip up (sorry F.A. ;) But ... we also landed 12 and 17 lb chinooks!! You should have seen my sons face after those two were in the boat. A bit different than the small trout he has caught. While the fish were truly amazing, what was far more rewarding was the experience in itself. After spending years on the ocean, it seems the salt water hasn't left my veins....

F.A. you have a big heart and your kindness will be a fond memory for my son and I ... we even had the pleasure of a dogfish at the end of the trip!!

Thanks again for a great day!
