OK I have jumped through all the hoops and paid the expences of the courses and taken the time off work to do so. And some smuck comes along and is undercutting charter rates and hasent got a C number on his boat, and is not in compliance with Transport Canada.
Where do we complain, or is it a just a bunch of bull$hit that liget charter outfits go through. Could I have ignored the Transport Canada bull$hit and saved myself a bunch of $$$ ? This guy has the nerve to advertise in large letters on the side of his boat that he charters, and sporting a 14K number. Ya I am pissed. :( :( :(

Phone transport canada office. i would imagine

Call TC and take a digital pic of his boat with guests to send along. Search his charter name to see if he has a website, give TC that info too. They will get in touch with him.

So who his is the guy and boat?? might as well tell us as you know sooke is too small a town it will"come"out eventually....

Last I checked there was no governing body that says you have to charge a certain amount per hour. If his prices make sense for him good for him.

Ya he should be legal but jumping through the hoops is mostly time not a big cost involved there. If your business is slow its not because of him, its a sh*t economy and you may need to look at your marketing strategy.

But all means go ahead and rat him out if it makes you feel better.

True the economy is in the shi&*er but I disagree about the back yarders (underground) not having an effect on the rest of us. Think about it...there is now a 12% tax we have to charge on top of our rates. You don't think that we are getting the question "do you charge the tax?" and then when we say we do they say I'll get back to you. Ya right, more money going into someones back pocket and with no benefit to the rest of us. So the back yard guy charges (say) $50.00 per hr and no tax. His goal is to have someone else pay for his boat and fishing habit. (most already have full time jobs or full pensions) I charge $90.00 per hr on average and collect the 12%. My goal is to feed my family and pay my mortgage. I know there are many different types of businesses out there who go through the same problem and it won't go away. These "cash" guys do have a negative impact on the rest of us and it is made worse during a bad economy.

Total B.S, There sure has beem lots of enforcement and on water checks[:0]Not! Anyone been checked once this season? Have had my C# for 7 years and was checked once in Mill Bay. I just find it entertaining, all the panic and threats of enforcement etc. Can you say "Cash Grab" Good on the guys who comply, but I don't think you can stop the ones who don't from charging for a day on the chuck. Who's going to do anything?

Hey Pappa Swiss I'm not gonna rat on him as you call it, I was just pissed thinking about him not being compliant and runnin' charters at discount prices. [:0] I talked to Rex from Renfrew and he says that the RCMP are checking the boats pretty good up there. I figure that it is just a mater of time and he will be checked. I can only hope. :D

Not even close to being true. Limited Masters course, $2500, life raft, $3800, all other safety equipment, $1200. Other courses, $400 a pop at least. There is plenty of costs involved...up in Hardy they don't even know how to start interviewing and regulating up here apparently...while I know the guys who are doing it without C #'s and stickers, and they are safe knowledgeable guys, it still kinda is annoying they don't have to put those costs in and can therefore charge less.

I have yet to see the aqua cops up there ever. DFO, yes, RCMP, no.

give your head a shake, you don't need a limited masters and $5000 in safety gear to charter. Even if that was true, its not a yearly cost, if you factor it out over years its a few bucks a day. Yet you think that is the reason they can undercut. They are undercutting because they are OK with making less - ie. they probably have another job.

Big whoop - Just because someone advertises on their boat or on a FREE website like craigslist does not mean he's getting business.

If someone advertising on craigslist is affecting your business then you're in real trouble, best to just sell the boat now.

Again the small cost of getting legal to charter is NOT the reason he's able to undercut you. He's undercutting as you say to probably just have some fun and pay for his boat.

Get over it and get a marketing plan, if you can't beat some slob in a piece of sh*t boat, things aren't looking good.

Who said I supported them dummy? Get over it and get on with your business. In any business there will always be somebody doing it cheaper - the idea is to be better and not make it a dollar game. Maybe they should make some business classes mandatory for guides. [xx(]

Yea right, the cost of all that course work and extra equipment is peanuts. Taxes? So what? And the cost of insurance? Who cares? Fish reg you say? Oh well.

We don't play by your rules. Who does this remind you of?;)

I guess to really understand the emotional side of this arguement..you would have to show up at your place of employment one morning..to be told by the boss that someone has offered to take your position for 60% of what you are being paid...will work under the table if need be and this guy doesn't have your experience but says he learns fast. So we'll call you in once and awhile when we need extra help. Oh and he may call you here and there asking for the odd pointer. This is why some guys get upset by "unfair" competition!

Bottom line, it is against the law to operate commerically without being in complince with TC. I think this is what pisses most guys off, it pisses me off. After all the BS this winter on how everyone better get their ducks in row cause the hammer is going to fall. Hasn't happened and won't happen.

All we can do is report, report, report. Hopefully sooner or later they will do something.

Why bother with the rules when you can work for craigslist eh?

Let's run a craigslist economy with lots of great deals and lots of people working for less.

Long live craigslist ...as long as I'm not the one taking it in the neck.

And while we're at it, let's vote Liberal again in the next provincial election. ;)

Remember, it's called "fishing," not "catching."
