Where did the smelts go?

I have been catching smelts for many years down at wreck beach but this year I haven't even caught one smelt ( I went down twice without any luck). Does anyone know where are the smelts?

They are killed by local Shrimp draggers whose fine mesh nets are hauled right where Smelts used to live as you can see there aren't many Smelts left maybe none now this has been going on for ages and is one reason I stopped eating Shrimp.

Thanks Dogbreath for the reply. I really enjoyed catching smelts back in the day and it is sad to see that mass fishing operations ruined smelts.
