So looking to finally purchase a new kicker. Had a Honda 5 HP(BF50) that ran alright but not super reliable. What would be the best buy for a 6hp. I am thinking Suzuki but need to shop around. Any deals out there?
Not sure there are any deals right now, but wait a couple months and you may find one.
Most 6-8 hp Yami, honda, suzuki kickers are in the $1800 -$2200 range
Tohatsu seem to have a better price offering, but i'm not sure about the dealer network here.
I have a 6hp Evinrude/Suzuki 4-stroke abortion that I wouldn't recommend to anyone. It's a 2000 model Evinrude with Suzuki powerhead. Runs great but, being a 1 cylinder I find it noisy and vibrates a lot. Also has gone through 1 top crank seal and 2 bottom crank seals which leak oil all over the place. MAybe the new ones are better, but I don't think they are much cheaper than Yamaha or Honda. I'd rather have an 8 hp twin cylinder motor. Tohatsu's aren't as popular in North America but are the 2nd largest seller in the world for outboards. Small Merc's and Nissan's are apparently made by Tohatsu.
Good point about the twin cyl vrs single vibration. I had a 2005 (or 06?) 6 hp 4stk Yam on my last boat (bought it because it was a twin) and it was a great little motor. Actually started and ran better than the T8 I have now.
I would consider a yamaha for a kicker. Ive had mine for 4 years now, and its been a great little motor. The two cylinder is nice for extra power and the lock on the tiller is a nice feature because than you can set your trolling speed which locks the throttle.
I have a 2008 6hp Merc four stroke long shaft that I've ran for 3 seasons now. The engine runs great. No issues with the engine except for the vibrations – it only has 1 cylinder. I purchased the 6hp over the 8 or 9.9 to save a few hundred bucks and to save a few pounds….never again! I usually troll with my 90hp Merc because it’s so much quieter. I would purchase a Merc again but it’ll have 2 cylinders!
