what is a troll?

The "troll" term is getting thrown around a lot on the conservation forum, and I think incorrectly.

A troll is someone who comes onto a forum with the sole intent of being disruptive, making provocative statements solely to get a response -- with no intent to engage in reasonable discussion.

This forum has seen its share of true trolls....people who come on just stir up s**t, and really have nothing intelligent to say. They are weeded out and banned, rightfully so.

But just because someone disagrees with you, or even with most everyone, does not make them a troll.

I don't agree with much of what is being posted on that forum, but I respect the opinions of others when presented intelligently and with reasonable analysis to back it up. I might try to change their opinion with some debate, but eventually might also figure there's no chance of their opinion changing, or mine, so we agree to disagree and leave it at that.

My suggestion ... don't overuse the troll term, or it stops having any useful meaning. Save it for the real trolls and stamp them out before they spread!
