looking to get two new rods and reels what do you think is the best to get

How much do you want to spend?

Since few here actually mooch do you want to use mooching gear like so many others?

Shimano convergence , Fenwick HMX are both good rods for around $100.
Shimano 2000/4000gt single action reels also around $100

If you want the best, Islander reels are nice but an MR3 is around $600
I would avoid the knockoff aluminum reels, they seem to have problems.

If you don't want to spend much the Shimano TDR/2000gt rod/reel combo is about $120...not my first choice, but decent for the price.

my main rods are Convergence and Richmake...I have a couple TDR back-ups.

I agree on the Shimano reels both the 2000’s and 4000’s. I have had three 2000’s since the Mid 1980’s and they are indestructible. Mine have been dropped on concrete, slammed around and step on in the bottom of the boat, hauled in kelp and heavy crap off the bottom, played countless fish and have never had any maintenance or repairs with the exception of new drag washers about every three years. They have always worked flawlessly, and provided you change out the drag washer occasionally, (there cheap) the drag is always smooth and they have never suffered from line creep. I also have a couple of 4000’s and have never had any problems with them including the reported rare issue of imploding spools from line compression when they first came out. I have not yet tried the newer versions that recently came out.
I don’t want to talk about Daiwa mooching reels by comparison or as good as they are, the extreme care necessary to protect the finish and labour intensive maintenance that my MR3’s require.

Shimano 9'0 TDR and 4000GT mooching combo are a good set up for a good price......IMHO

If you go with this, make sure drag on reel will tighten up completely. The version that was released about 6 months ago had a defect with the drag.

Im a big fan of the daiwa m1 s. They have their problems with line creep but ive found them to be very dependable.

As for rods, my favorite are trophy xls. But i also use shimano convergences as well and really like them. Would love to try out an islander sometime, but afraid to let some of my fishing buddies hold on to something worth that much!

i think the TDR is a good entry level for the price, would i spend more if i could when starting out... well yes

but i have had a few of these with more than a few newbs over the years who havent wrecked em yet, i think one that still gets use is over 3yrs old and doesnt get washed down or nothing, lol

do they get the same feel as some of the higher end rods.... well of course not, but you do get a good feel for the fish on em ( i own some loomis rods for comparison)

Sage rod and Islander reel. Its on my bucket list..

Ya...mine too, but unless you buy a used Sage downrigger/mooching rod you aren't gonna get one. Sage stopped make dr/mooch blanks from what I understand.

Oh....and MR3...not MR2. ;) I am sure you'll find a way though to bust the handles off. [:p]

In my opinion:

The best: Sage or GL Loomis rod & Islander MR3 reel($1,200 est.)

Best value for $: Shimano Technium rod & Shimano 4000 GT reel($275)

Long live wild salmon!!!

Hey Pippen, Sage still makes salmon/downrigger rods according to their website.

I've seen these rods, very nice [:p]

Interesting....I had heard they were not a while back; and had kinda forgot until I was reminded yesterday. Maybe I am mixed up....THAT is entirely possible. [:I] ;)

2x GL.Loomis and 2x MR3's

Very happy with the setup and can't compare to G2000/combo's but were great starters.

Shimano TDR and 4000GT combo $170 at Canadian Tire. Not a bad deal imo.

Shimano reel - Yes

Shimano TDR rod - Not so much.

I've used both for years. While I like the TDR rods, they are not the best for novice fishermen. I've had many guests break off big fish using these rods. In 2008, I switched to a longer Shimano rod 10.5' Convergence (if I'm not mistaken). Since then, I have never had a guest break off any fish. The extra foot and a half provides so much more shock absorbing when the guy on the rod is slow to let a fish run. It has saved many fish for my guests. The only downside is that the longer rod is a bit much to handle in a small boat - but well worth it in my opinion.
