What high end reel should I buy?

I would not currently buy a high end reel.....the term "high end" is a selling catch-phrase to make you think you bought something that is very good quality.

Of the reels available at the moment, there always seems to be a litany of beefs and complaints about them.

So remove the term "high end" and we're back to reality.

Every so often someone comes up with a legendary piece of fishing tackle that is simple, effective, last for years and is virtually "bulletproof".

I am waiting for that day......in regard to salmon reels.

Until they come up with something as I described, that the average guy can afford, I have no reason to part with my Daiwa M-1's and M-1 Plusses, which have lasted me for years, caught me lots of fish and are still going strong.

In the "Buy Candian" thread I praised local producers...but they've got a ways to go yet in reels nowadays before I'm parting with my cash.

Shimano 4000gt (old school, not the new ones) :)

I like this saying, which is based on the biology of the brain function....
"If the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body, then only left handed people are in their right mind!" LOL

BTW I am a leftie but I always reel with my left hand because I believe that is the one doing all the complex work and manipulation - palming, adjusting the drag, shooting line for fly casting etc. Yes this means I have to fly and spin cast with my right hand but seems to work fine.......... And the rod in my right means I can use my "good' arm for doing whatever else is required, drinking coffee or manipulating the net!! LOL

I agree with Englishman about keeping your good(left) arm for doing everything else. As for reels I use to love my diawa reel till I got a screaming deal on a left handed M3 and I will never go back unless some unfortunate turn of events happen and I loose it overboard or it gets stolen. The new drag system on them works much better then the M2 use too.

I started with 2 Shimano GT2000's and after fighting constant line creep and setting drag to its fullest I decided to go MR3's. 2 years and NO issues. Absolutely awesome for me and never had line creep and flawless drag.

/fish on

I have 4 islanders 2 mr3s and 2 mr2s i like the mr3 for playing fish but when in the rodholders they tend to creak a bit but the mr2s are nice they dont creak but the spool is smaller but both are good
