I agree that the forum should be a place to discuss these issues and I am disappointed that the thread was closed. I think the real problem is some of the members being unable to discuss an issue in a mature way.
You're kidding me right?? In the whole thread, these were your only comments:
"That fish has a better chance of surviving than anything you catch summer steel!"
"I agree with you about the fish handling, and I also agree with the idea that the hatchery wants anglers to harvest the steelhead.
However, it's this hatchery put and take program that has caused the deterioration of the Stamp River fishery. If you talk to any fisheries biologist they will tell you that there really are no true wild steelhead in the Stamp system anymore. Natural spawning of wild fish with the hatchery clones has reduced genetic diversity to the point where even the wild fish are actually hatchery offspring.
What this means is that when the funding is cut to the Robertson Creek hatchery, which is highly likely over the next 5 years or so, the steelhead returns will likely diminish to the point of angling closure. Hatchery steelhead do not adapt well to environmental change, disease, etc. due to their lack of genetic diversity. You can say what you want about broodstock but when your broodstock is actually of hatchery origin then it makes no difference.
There is a reason why the Stamp is the only river on the island that is a put and take steelhead fishery - you have to sacrifice the virility and genetic diversity of the wild fish in order to make it happen. In other words, you can't have your cake and eat it too.
This being said, I agree with what others have said about preserving the integrity of the forum; but it's hard to resist taking shots when hardcore meat fishermen are preaching about fish handling skills.
Hatchet buried... for now."
This is YOUR idea of discussing issues in a mature way[?] You take cheap shots, make false accusations about me, parade out your ethical & moral platform about what YOU think everyone should conform to & make statements & claims without any facts to support them. In other words, all you have is your opinion, unsupported & uninformed that it might be, it is still all yours.
quote:It's important to remember that SS and the boys represent a very small percentage of the anglers out there. Most of the serious anglers in our province practice catch and release and have a high level of ethics. Riding around in a jetboat and taking your limit every time you are out is considered unethical by most serious fishermen. And then to accuse others of poor fish handling and preach about conservation is a farce. If everyone fished like these guys we would not have the quality fisheries we do today.
So, if people aren't walking the shore with a fly rod practicing only C&R, then they aren't real fishermen with your high level of ethics huh?? Even if they are fishing a river like the Stamp where there are surplus hatchery salmon & steelhead put there for people to catch & keep. Funny, I don't see you complaining about all the people who target these fish in the saltwater & kill their limit every day. That is where most of these fish are harvested. Maybe they should only be allowed to chuck Mickey Finns from the rocky outcroppings on shore & have to release everything. It's no different with the Stamp steelhead, you even SAID, ""I agree with you about the fish handling, and I also agree with the idea that the hatchery wants anglers to harvest the steelhead", then you turn around 180 degrees & slam people for doing exactly what you agreed the fish were there for. Just a BIT hypocritical, don't ya think?? You are either a serious, highly ethical C&R only guy, or you DO agree with the put & take concept of hatchery fish & that these fish ARE there to be caught & kept. Which is it?? Please clarify your own statements so that we can put all this to rest & we won't have to listen to any more of it in the future.
As far as riding around in a jet boat goes, spare me your jealousy. Have you ever even fished the Stamp at this time of year?? There is practically no shore access due to the high & still rising with all this rain, water. Simple fact is, if you want to fish it right now, your best chance is in a boat, weather it be jet, drift or pontoon. I guess you NEVER see any boats up on any of the rivers on the Skeena system eh?? I guess all those guides up there must be, according to your high standards, unethical for using such a device. Maybe you should go & voice your concerns to them & see what happens.
quote:And then when I posted about the negative aspects of hatchery mass production these same people call BS and bury their heads in the sand. There is a multitude of research out there that supports this and yet these people that claim to be educated and experienced reveal their ignorance yet again. It is a proven fact that wild steelhead are genetically superior to hatchery raised clones. One only has to visit the Skeena system to observe this.
You posted your opinion, unsubstantiated by any facts. Where is all this research you speak of?? Have you personally ever read any of it, or are you just passing along "things you over heard". I posted a link to the actual numbers of returning fish in Washington & Oregon State so far this year. That, along with good returns this year to the Stamp, Quinsam, Campbell, Little & Big Qualicums, Quatse, Cluxewe & Marble rivers, proves that hatchery programs DO work. They are not the be all end all fix it solution, but they DO have a place in fisheries management & have proven very successful on the south coast over the years. Without hatchery salmon, there would be no saltwater fishery, plain & simple.
Here is the link again for the updated numbers south of the border:
