What happened to all the money?

There are many ways that an couch potato person can help Not all people can physically do the stream thing By donating money and or prizes to the sses derby or just by making sure others do their fair share It will all help in the end .You can have all the labour in the world but if you don’t have the money for infrastructure things will slowly grind to a halt The sea pen idea is a good one and I assume that will be the second one as I know SSES does one at the government dock There is a lot of work just to make sure the little ones get fed.
I guess my last posting must have offended some one as it was deleted by mistake? I guess my posting will have to be a little more politically correct
Conserve your catch

ya smiley, i'll start another thread closer to the time and you are officially signed up, but I think last year, the day I got in there with Chris73, there were only about 12 volunteers. Not sure if any of those were from this forum (think mostly the older regulars), but hell, we should be able to do much better than that this year. The only thing physical about it was standing over a bowl - pretty easy stuff.

I expect cash flow with SSE is in pretty good shape as I mentioned, our derby alone amounted to 1/2 their operating budget. I'm sure they did well from their derby as well.

OK after hearing enough B.S. of people speculating once again about things they dont know anything of, and from a meeting that was asked a question to the new manager at sooke marina. He did some inquiring and he personally asked me to post so all of you could read.

IT IS</u> VERY clear in black and white for all of you to read so here you have it!!!!!!!

To whom it may concern:

There appears to be some confusion in the area reagarding the derby hosted by Sooke Harbour resort and Marina in 2009 that appears to involve our organization. The Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society would like to make our postion clear to all and sundry regarding the matter.

We would like to make it clear from the outset that we have always had the support of the management at the Resort and continue to do so.They continue to support our enhancement efforts and have once again offered in the placement and operation of a sea-pen for Chinook smolts at the facility.

The strangely recurring issue of funding from the inaugural derby of 2009 is something that never was and never will be subject the society is involved with. The Society was never "promised" any funds, other than a stated hope that some monies might be available when the dust settled and possibly could accure to us.Since, for reasons we were never particually concerned with, the surplus never occured, we were content to congradulate them on a successful derby and carry on.

The Resort gave generously to our own Derby, with an accomodation package, for which we were grateful, as we are for all the great sponsers who supported us and the work we do.We have never "expected" anything from the generous people and businesses who give us their support and are grateful for those who repeatedly are kind enough to do so.

The society would like to go on record as neither supporting or condoning the continued negativity of this whole issue. We will continue to work with the Resort where the enhancement of the resource is concerned and be happy to do so.

Could someone post a list of contact numbers to volunteer for hatchery stuff?

Mel, Bryan, Glen seem to be good go to guys for finding out where and how you can help out. I'll gladly post more info here when it comes time for clipping, but there are always things going on for those with more available time - case in point work party this Saturday and feeding every day. Nice to see you are onboard Kelly for the clipping - I'm sure there will be more to come.

Well Wolf after reading the article in the Sooke paper and talking to some locals close to the inside, of course the hatchery is going to take the high road and stay clear of this mess. Bottom line is there is no money left to donate to the hatchery or any other charity!! Some people have been adding up the figures and things don't add up. Now the marina has a new manager.. hmmm whats up ? Lots of people asking questions. Now hearing the gaming commission maybe involved. Again good on Banana's and N joy as that was the only money the hatchery saw from the derby as in a donation.. And yes it is clear as BLACK AND WHITE !!

I dont know about ANY of that but a letter from the president saying what he just said I dont think is "taking the high road" as Sooke and the fishing community is way to small for any bad press.as it always comes back to bite ya in the arse.

Im just the messenger he asked me so I put it up, as he came into a barage of questions.

How would you personally feel your first week at a new job not knowing all the ins ands outs being baraged youd be asking for answers as well.

I cant answer why the old manager left, Really its none of our business anyways, and personally dont care as to why there is always 2 sides to a story!!!! If your so inclined go out there your self and ask WHY?? instead of doing it on here, then get back to us all.

This is a good forum. lets keep it that way.Your kinda saying a few slandering things.

Good luck Wolf

I think what is being expressed here is disappoinment. HUGE money derby locally, with aspects of its promotion based on at least some funds going back to worthy non-profit causes, yet for a variety of reasons it did not happen. Direct costs have to be reimbursed, obviously, but how much of the discrepancy was due to indirect costs: salaries, overhead, etc? That's the part that doesn't sit well. How many entrants paid their fee thinking "ah well, even if I lose, at least some of it goes to charity", to instead find the funds diverted away? That's disappointing.

But that's old news, what's past is past, no point crying about it. Let's hope the new regime gets it right this year.

Though I'm curious...looking for more info, I see the salmonclassic.ca URL has expired and there's no more mention of the derby on the Sooke Harbour Marina webpage that I can see ... oversight or something up?

Here you go: http://salmonclassic.ca/

Actually based on some comments and just out of curiosity, I looked at those “numbers” everyone was throwing around. I might have a little experience organizing and costs associated with different types of promotions.

If one was to put those numbers on a spreadsheet , which I just did. Then estimating the costs - 3 nights accommodation, meals, banquet tickets, moorage, team jackets/shirts/hats, prizes, labor, GST, tent, addition supplies and equipment, advertising, and with little unaccounted misc, then take the $6,000 service donated to the hatchery - believe it or not, Profisher’s $7,500 works out very close and within reason!

Disappointing – maybe, butI don’t see how? In fact, I think it was quite the “success”! People have to remember – the “main” reason for this was to stimulate the local economy - was it not? I believe it did that. Sure, everyone (including me) would have loved to see a larger donation, but really don't see it there?

Just... IMHO!

Oh Wolfy you havn't even put your boat there yet and your nose is already brown.lol.
I've talked to a few people about this and i'm still up in the air some numbers don't add up but pf explained most of it.Guess i'll just try and win this year so i can donate more lol.

Crap i goto go gona be late for my trip

Nope not at all I wasnt even in the derby I really dont care I COULD CARE LESS!!! The question is "WHY" this derby has created so much fuss why not any other derbies I can think of a few others that really make me think hhhhhmmmm but its not anyones business then the people doing them and we are not privy to finacial statements it not our business period.Im done!!!!!

If you guys really have a problem go out there and ask about it yourself and see where that gets you instead of speculating on here some of you are worse than a buch of ol men sitting in a bar discussing the good ol days

From what I've heard Matt took a new job in Nova Scotia at another fishing based resort. He jumped ship based on his belief he was putting himself and his family in a more secure financial position. He would know based on his close contact with owners how well or poorly the resort is doing and what may be up for the future. No one has mentioned a 120 room hotel going up next door that will no doubt cut into already slim tourists dollars for anyone already in the room rental business in Sooke. I see someone simply taking a more secure job, one where he already has experience and would be comfortable taking.
Some of you should work for the media, you are already experts at creating something from nothing. Maybe quit your jobs and take one that you have experience and some comfort in too!!!

If the intent was to support a local hatchery, offer up the vacant space at a nominal cost and ask the locals to run it. It's otherwise waaay too easy to run up a loss. Accommodation costs and the derby operator runs the resort??? Eh? Even Sooke Council wouldn't stop that low...right?

LOL Lets see you give a go at convincing the people who own those condo's to give up the entire Labour Day weekend out of the goodness of their hearts. They were told they couldn't stay in their own units for that weekend in return for room revenue. I think the owners get 60% and the resort 40%. The only money in the original budget for the resort was from the rooms. The budget was very tight for covering all costs and allowing for up to a $25,000 donation, at the $6,000 per team.

I'm sure the resort would love to let someone else take on all the risk, work and headaches involved in running a major event like this and still book the rooms. I seriously doubt anyone in their right mind would step forward to take the job.

There was no loss, a net profit of $7,500 of which $6,000 went to a local salmon project.

Then call it what it is as a promotion for the resort and a way to fill that last long weekend of the summer.

If that was the main intend I would agree. My vision for the tournament was to have the largest pursed salmon tournament on the west coast held in Sooke. Putting the town on the map. The up to $25,000 donation was the second reason for the tournament. I guess I will concede that the Vancouver Island Classic is primarily a promotion for the town of Sooke. I'm so sorry, what was I thinking.

I have had my cub reporter hat on and have checked a few things out.
The sea pen $6000 project was not carried out as proposed (Matt left before all the details could be worked out) The transport cost and the food for this year is going to be paid by Sooke Salmon Enhancement society not Sooke Harbour Marina (as a result SSES will not be doing this again next year at this location) Sooke Harbour is going to supply the space for the fry only not the labour (I would be happy to help feed them during regular daylight hours) So I am quite curious to which project they donated the money to. I think that the reason this is still going on is that during a regular derby some body would announce to thank everybody at the derby and say we are donating to x charity x$ or there would be an announcement in the local paper saying thank you to the derby for donating x $. Nobody from Sooke Harbour resort has done this to date except Profishers statement that they donated $6000 to somewhere. Just the fact that this thread is still going strong is enough to show that yes some people do still care I know of 1 fellow that was in the derby and he talked to a lawyer because he thought that the money was going to salmon enhancement (not SSES) The lawyer said it was a moral issue not a legal one. Communication and accounting transparency seem to be the issue They could have avoided all this BS by just writing a check to one of the many salmon enhancement societies early on instead they have dragged their feet, it has only been about 7 months And yes it is too bad that SSES has been dragged into this mess but the organizers may have worded their initial press release a little oddly Saying that the money would go to local salmon enhancements projects, hence the mix up
Big dreams = big headaches Ask Sooke Council
