Just got back from my buddies stag/fishing trip. Figured I'd post little fishing report. We went out on party style boat out of Westport.
We were 20 guys on the boat. It was my first time mooching for Salmon. Most of the guys were serious fisherman and had done some guiding, mainly in Alaska. We went about 5 to 6 miles offshore and then started fishing. I could not believe how many boats went out of Westport. Several other party boats and bunch of sport boats. Pretty much half and half mooching vs trolling.
We were fishing cut herring and whole herring. Basically dropping it down 25 to 35 pulls and then slowly reeling it up. We hit 2 Springs pretty quickly and then it went dead. Judging by other boats in the area we were not the only ones. Our boat ran south to an area where there were about 30 to 40 trollers and several sport boats. We hit 1 Spring and that was it. We then moved back to the first area where we hit 2 more spring. I got one around 14 pounds. All in all we hit 6 Springs for 20 guys for 8 hours of fishing. Not but great but it was interesting to see a new area and try different technique. I could not get over the sheer number of anglers on the water down there.
It was different type of fishing for me as I much pretty troll or bucktail. The mooching we did with boat was just drifting. I hit one small Coho, had two other hits and the one spring. Definitely felt more in more in tune with the mooching by end of the day. May try it again up here.
