Yup a nice 20-25 lbs "chicken". Oh well it was a nice day, a bit windy, hit a couple of fish, and enjoyed a day on the water.

What more can a guy ask for?

Cheers

I bet that hali was pretty confused when got released....:D:D
Maybe he'll go tell his buddies;)

No Hali for dinner, but 4 nice crabs were nice enought to walk into my trap, so they did just fine:D

Caught him trolling in 120' w/ an army truck hootchie.

They come in QUITE shallow sometimes, wherever the grub is. In 2001, jigging off the Sooke Bluffs by the kelp before it was an RCA, we had one to the boat that bent my small gaff and broke off (I wasn't ready for Hali's, we were doing winters and rockfish). Off Carmanah and Bonilla, while trolling for salmon or just farting around, I have hooked several in 40-50 feet of water of good size. We were working off Camper Creek last year (2007), once again, 50 feet of water, and one of the boats I was working with landed an 80 pounder.

Trolling Swiftsure, I hit a 30ish one 100 feet down in 300+ feet of water!

I think that a 50 pound fish would have to eat like a 50 pound dog, he's got to eat a lot to keep moving, and %90 of all sea life is in the top 60 feet of water, so I'm willing to bet that the big cows come in as close as they have to to fill thier belly, especially in the spring when the herring spawn in shallow.

There are also plenty taken in the mouth of Port San Juan (Port Renfrew) in 60-100 feet of water trolling for salmon in the late summer.

It was caught in a 115 ft of water, about 10' off the bottom w/ an army truck hootchie. Also it was on the North Island. We used to catch a few trolling at 40' when there was lots of bait around. Man is that a different fight!!!

In the Charlottes, we routinly catch the around the Mazaraddo Islands in as little as 25 feet of water. I have personally harpooned one for a fellow that weighed 107lbs and it was caught off the back of the Perigrine Lodge lunch boat which was anchored in 28 feet of water. Most of the food for them is in the shallows like clam necks, crabs and small cod.

I caught two halibut up in QCI last late springtime, the same size of the halibut you caught/released. Very impressive! very good eating fish!
