Weird Summer so far

So how much do you think all the wet weather we have been having is an effect on the salmon this year??

Most of the creeks and rivers are higher than normal and there is lots of fresh water flooding into the ocean. Just look at the Fraser, never seen it so high in July in Prince George. Do you think that the fish are moving through faster due to the higher than usual fresh water??

The reason I ask this is a buddy picked up a an 11 lbs coho with a very pronounced kipe in Hardy on Sat. I know about maturity and such, it just seems that fish are doing strange things this year. Hardy has got fish, McNeill is very spotty and then there is some of the best fishing in a long time in Campbell River, Courtenay and Nanaimo, so the fish are moving through, but not stopping at the usual spots.

Any other unusual occurances out there??

Cheers

It is a weird one. Tons of immature herring in the straight and there are actually coho aswell. I have caught 5 coho this year alone near nanaimo compared to 3-4 over the last 5 years.

We have fished Nootka for the last 4 years in mid/late June and gone back in late July/Aug and have never caught coho (except in Aug) to the extent we did this year, as well as everyone else has done.
We caught them from the surface down to 145ft. When we were up there from June 21 to July 5, we didn't keep a record, but we had to have caught around 150 to 170 fish (springs & coho, with coho being the most abundance) We have never had a trip like that one and will probably never have one again. It is a strange year.

Speaking of weird Sockeye returns in the Kenai look spectacular.

Someone I know who lives in Alaska said it looks like early fish are late and late fish are early making the river boil with fish.

Kelly remember there was no Herring fishery this winter it was closed because of the Earth quake in Japan no market for the herring. That I think explains the immature herring?? Sitka I have been trying to figure that out also why arent these runs hitting your area?? It has been great down hear since May. This weekend offshore we picked up a Coho prob close to 15 pds with the start of a hooked nose?? Wheres he going?? States? Im headin up your way this weekend Ive got mixed reports Salmon are showing up there and hali also sure hope its better than 3 weeks ago. Anyhow must agree it is a weird yr and again thank you to our friends down South for there Hatch programs.
