Stewards Of The Land...

These days when everyone has a camera incidents such as this will be brought to light much more frequently. Just like the ghost fishing net and salmon dumping I photographed and reported last month.

I'd be willing to bet this type of thing has been going on all across bc for a long time. Hopefully the increased exposure will reduce the waste, poaching and pollution by all groups.

trendsetter... did anything come of that last scenario with that ghost net?

indeed, this one is sad to see as well, but good it is in the media i suppose?

Well I was contacted by a producer from CBC news that saw the post. However by that time the net was gone and they weren't interested in doing a TV spot if they couldn't film the net in place.

I was later contacted by a producer from CBC radio and I ended up doing a recorded interview on the topic over the phone. I never heard back from her so I'm not sure what if anything came of it. I do know that several media outlets, the DFO and the Musqueam band council all heard about it.

Didn't hear anything back from DFO regarding either incident.

Here we go again.... Not to mention how many local bands on Van isle offered me personally Fraser sockeye this year which given from mainland tribes as their annual "food fishery". When they can't sell it they just toss it in a ditch. In this case that is probably what happened. Just makes me sick. When is this going to end?? Again I have no problem when the fish is used for ceremonial/food purposes and that it will all be consumed. It is just the waste of fish and breaking the rules I have a problem with.

High Five

Another good reason why FN should be allowed to sell their fish and why courts are granting more bands that opportunity like they have done in Alberni. Not saying it will prevent waste but might reduce it.

A problem with FN's being able to sell "their" fish is were does it end? Right now they fish for food, and cultural reasons. In 'theory' it should be relatively easy to put a logical limit on how much they need for that. However, once they fish for profit where do you draw the line?

I could see a future were both Fed. and Prov. govt's will save $ in FN support programs and happily grant a large share of fish to FN's to help them become more economically independant from govt. support. In theory this may not be a bad idea, but what impact will it have on non FN commercial and recreational fishing? You could have more situations where the FN commericial fishers get first cut on a run of fish (to meet their economic/funding needs) and if they over fish it, or there is non left for non FN's fishers too bad, as they need the money to financially support themselves. They now have the right to commercially fish the sockeye run in Port Alberni for the first time. We will see what that means for the future of that fishery.

If it is left up to DFO to decide how much to limit FN commercial fisheries (based on past history on both coasts) God help us all, and especially the fish! I also can see a time where most commercial fishing is done only by FN's (as part of their treaty rights and govt. economic support) and whatever is left (if any, at times) can be somehow divyed up between the non FN fishers. I am not against FN having a fair share of the fish in BC, I am just wondering where the lines will be drawn limited resource. I would prefer to see all fishers treated equally, regardless of their race (get rid of the us and them factor) and everyone be treated the same, under the same rules regarding the management of this precious resources. I am no expert in this area, this is just the ramblings of a worried sportfisherman.

Not to detract from your point, but...
The greatest threat to the Alberni sockeye run comes not from the local FN's. Rather it comes directly from those who are supposed to be "managing" them. Case in point this season: The Dino arbitrarily decides there are "too many sockeye" approaching the system. Their response: unleash the bag fleet to the tune of 20 plus seiners and over 150 gillnetters for a period of THREE WEEKS! This at a time in the season when areas are being shut down to protect returning Henderson sockeye, and early returning springs. Yup, close down areas to sportfishing to "protect" the "threatened stocks", then HAMMER THE BEJESUZ out of the entire area with the bag fleet!

No on-board observers, so The Dino relies on the individual skips for catch numbers. Not only were MASSIVE volumes of sockeye removed, but Henderson sox, the early springs and pretty much most of the summer run steelhead were vacuumed up as well.

So, IMHO, it is pretty much fact that the greatest single weapon working against our local sockeye run is the very ministry that is mandated with managing them.

I do hear you though regarding an eventual split of harvest between FN's and everyone else. Given the way that is currently orchestrated, I cannot possibly believe that can in any way be good for the fish, nor us as anglers. Shudder to think that may be the way The Dino ends up going... :(

they have observers from jo thomas at the plants when they unload to validate the catch numbers reported

The responsibility of the salmon on this coast is being put in the hand's of the folks we have all seen way to much of lately in the paper's and the new's on television. Are these the folk's we want looking after our salmon???????
