Victoria - Shore Casting

Howdy, I just started shore casting in Victoria. Preferably I would like to catch cod, but any edible fish would be nice. I have only tried my luck at the breakwater, without any success. Any tidbit of advice on baits, locations, lures, techniques, times would be appreciated. Thank you very much.

Are you familiar with the powerbait setup for trout in lakes?

A similar approach can be used for cod off of the breakwater.

Rod------------------------------------slip weight-----bead----swivel----------leader---------hook (with anchovy on the end)

Cast that rig as far as you can... tighten the line until there isn't too much slack, and simply let it sit.

That is the most successful method that I have seen used at the breakwater... There is a gentleman that fishes with this setup at the breakwater and does very well... I could have sworn he was using a spark plug as a cheap slip weight as well......had he spoken any English, I would have asked him more about his rig.

BIGGG ling cod off the Breakwater, so keep trying and good stuff will happen.... someone took a 40 lb last year and my friend took a 15 lb ling while trolling for salmon less than 75 feet off the Breakwater.

That being said, if you catch a big one like the 40lb... please let it go :D

Awesome, thank you, but just to clarify slip weights are easily found at tackle shops? A leader is a length of line? Would a bead be found at a tackle shop too or would it be easy enough to fashion your own?

yes you can steal your daughters beads, yes a leader is a length of line, now with using an anchovy on the end the hook wont float up so I would use like a 16" length of 60lb mono as lings have teeth.

Can maybe look for some floating grubs as well and run a little bit longer of a leader as ogden point can be a bit weedy.

When I was ten and moved to Victoria 18 years ago I used to catch fish running my spin caster with buzz bombs and that exact setup, you will catch them just have patience, and if you get bored their is pretty good scenery if you know what I mean.

Eaglemaniac, thank you, I found that site at the beginning, it has a lot of good info on it. NootkaSounder, thank you for the info, what is the purpose of the bead then? I have been using a buzzbomb with a similar rig, I think the bait will be the catalyst I'm looking for. Recommendation on weight and buzzbomb size?

what is the purpose of the bead then?

Jordius,

If you are using the set-up suggested by mhbradley, which is a standard bottom fish set-up for Ogden, the bead goes between the slip weight or egg sinker and the swivel to protect the knot at the swivel from the weight pounding against it as you cast out. Of course, if you're like me you'll probably lose your terminal tackle long before that becomes a problem.

A lot of people use that rigging with octopus or squid as bait for ling cod--and it will also be taken by rockfish, but remember you can only take one.

You really do have to be patient and let it sit on bottom.

If you're using a buzzbomb or something similar to cast, the weight will largely depend on your rod. An ultralight Fenwick will only take a 3/4 ounce lure at most but a stiffer rod will handle two ounces or more.

Expect to spend lots of money on tackle if you're fishing from shore at Ogden, Ten Mile, Cormorant, Beechey Head or pretty much anywhere else.

Good luck.

Thank you, I will be testing out that rig this evening with some anchovy. Letting the bait sit should attract something. And yes, I have spent at least $50 on tackle so far.

A few people in the facebook group I'm in have hit the Breakwater with some success. I troll for lings from my boat and I had no luck trolling the breakwater this year, hit my other spot and in 5 hours over 2 days pulled in lots lings (Fish Assassin doesn't like me specifying numbers caught), and we kept 4 between 15 to 18lbs. So there are lots of lings around.
