Victoria reports - spring/summer 09

Worked the Gap for a few hours this AM. No fish for me, and I didn't see anyone else catching either. Lots of boats out on the Flats. Now that I know were they are, I may try there next. Man I am hurting for a fish this year.

Tons of feed in Oakbay, we hit 2 fish sat, and 2 today and lost
them all. bummer :(
It was a great day on the water, and we got a limit of crab on the way in.

P.S. Nice fish Rico !!!

We were at the Gap for about 1/2 an hour....no bait showing on the sounder so we hit the flats for a couple of hours and picked up 3 springs to 15 lbs.

Hi, I'm staying in victoria at the wharf street dock and will be out fishing tomorrow. Wo were is the flats and the gap? just general loction for us yankee's. And where would a good place for crabs be. Talked to two guides today and they both had a fish each for their clients. One nice 15 lbs. thank you for any help. I will be running to sooke in a few days to visit that area.

I am not the best one to give directions to those spots, because I just fished there for the first time myself. But, generally, both spots are around Oak Bay. The Gap is the gap between the two bigger islands in the bay. Don't go into it though, it is both shallow and closed. The Flats is outside of the bay, extending East, roughly from the golf course to those same islands.

Islanderguy: I wish I had gone outside. What is the tide like out there? If I wandered too far south at the Gap today, I got into huge currents that I could barely troll back out of. I want to hit the Flats later this week, but with these huge tides, I need to get more info first? Congrats on the good fishing, I should have made the move.

Hey Steelhead, The tide wasn't too bad out there as we fished the tide change around 9:30. We were in the middle of the pack of about 20 boats out there. All of our fish were caught within 30 ft of the bottom. Email me if you'd like any more details.

starcrafttom,

If your're stying in the inner harbour, you can do pretty well fishing the Victoria waterfront -- you don't have to venture too far.

You can fish the breakwall just outside the harbour -- there is lots of bait there. or head out to the deeper water past the marker buoy and fish the contour 100-140' deep past the flag pole all the way to Trial Island (the fish are there too, just everyone is fishing the flats these days)...

You can drop your crab traps just outside the harbour entrance on the West side (look for the others).

thank you all for the info. I may try just out side the harbor tomorrow and drop a pot. always like a crab feed. If any of you see me out there say hi. We are in a 22 ft c-dory with Susan E on the side.

Out this morning from 6-9 on the flats. As we were dropping the first downrigger --BAM!!! Nice upper-teen grabbed the anchovy. Got some good videos of the fish's first pass of the boat, but alas -- didn't capture the long distance release or the long face on my fishing partner :-(

Yep, same here, fewer numbers and getting smaller now. This early run is probably slowing down now. Might be time to turn the attention to Constance Bank to see if the Coho are showing up.

Hey Scott , Hopefully you had the video going for that net job! We put on a clinic. Of what not to do. I could not believe we got that fish in the boat!
Tried again this morning. not a sniff. Oh well.

So as far as the Flats goes, does this mean it's done for springs? Or does it tend to get another push through in the summer. I was getting pumped to have a new fishing spot, so I hope it's not over before I even get out there....

This was not a normal year on the flats given the last couple...

I've been fishing the flats for 15 years and the this is the best we've had for a long time.
In the last few i've hardly bothered and usually run down to Clover
or the waterfront.
I believe the fish Nanaimo saw for the last 2 weeks of May were the same ones we saw for the 1st 2 weeks of June.
No way of backing that up, just a gut feeling.
