Victoria Reports - Spring and Summer 2011

Hay oak bay is on fire lots of big fish Jessie let go his first tyee this year dean get out there ,gaypride was the trick Saturday many over 20lb let go or long release. Good luck out there

Mike:rolleyes:,It was more like a #25 foto taken & reluctantly released @ the side of the boat. After a ten year hiatus took the boy's in a boat they rented over to the "flats" for a fish.Just before we pushed off the dock looked up to see Rob H. slip behind the breakwater like always ahead of me. It's amazing how the well-fished think alike! Ended the day with 4 nice ones in the box & a bucket of crabs to boot.

Foot note:remember if you rent a boat & plan to fish deeper than 100' check the sparce gear they supply!, the rental company in? had @ most 115' on one rigger with a nasty fray:mad: @ 90' no spare ball,no release clips & min.life jackets hmmm! thankfullythe skipper knew the fish would move into shallower waters as the flood turned on;)

Constance bank looked like a mini swiftsure this morn! We were on the water by 5am and it was glass calm and just a ton of needle fish on the surface , seals ,seals and more seals , and lots of birds. The fishing was excellent having at least a doz to the boat by 10am ,nothing to big but all 12-17lbs. What a great morn to be on the water.

Never mind haha. I typed it into google and it gave a detailed map. I will have to sneak out there this week.

Hmmm. Wow Oak Bay/Conny Bank that's big area do I drop the gear past Ten Mile Pt. or start on the eas./west side of the bank?
On 2nd thought I better not be a Knotty Boy & skip work;)

Welcome aboard triple- 'F'!

Lots of good advice here if you need it.

Made it out sunday with a buddy. late start, so we missed the good bite on the bank. Dropped the gear at 11ish and picked up a mid teener right away, then nada. One strike about 4, but it didn't stick. Early start next time. What a beauty day though, and my first real trip in a long time. Picked it up on small chovey.

Buddy hooked a 20lb Spring by the tail this morning, it came up from 120' in about 6 seconds and then went on a a huge run.
We were both convinced a seal had grabbed it.
Barbless Gammie 3/0 right through the meat of the tail held on for the fight.

Wow, so maybe the "use the tail to whack the bait theory holds true". How else would he do that?

How far back are you running your trailing hook? 2 feet? haha..

Just joking! I have caught a little one before by the back end and thought it was a monster. They can put up a mean fight when you cant direct their head!

Nice catch either way!

Anything caught by tail feels like a lunker.Come to think of it took my cousin out for once in lifetime fish last summer fish pounds off the rigger we chase it for 20min. him getting tired me thinking Tyeeeee. Finally comes along side the das boot me ready with net get a good look at it WTF it's a very lrg. Pink hooked by the tail anyways he's pleased as punch me not so much.
Consolation prize it's a Trophy Pink (off Pink Year)& most of the "Derby Dorks" were rod starring so they got a good show & the next pass I hooked him a 25 lb.spring to rub it in.

P.S he thinks it was a Trophy Pink so if he ever tells you the story don't burst his bubble ;)

Halibut action is still going strong. Boated two around 45 lbs and had a good one chew through the leader, all within the first hour. Pilchard and octi combo did the trick.

Crabbing was also amazing with 8-10 keepers a trap. They seem to be hardening up too.

Salmon much slower in OB this past week and then the whales came thru westbound late this afternoon. Think we might be in that slow period between runs but YNK.
Good time to get some Hali before they close it.
