Victoria prawning

I was always told that there was no prawning off Victoria because of fast currents. Just for fun I thru a trap out last week in 200 ft and got 200 Coon Stripes. Used my Scotsman to pull the trap. Worked like a charm. Will be putting two traps down next and work up to four. Thanks for all the info on this forum finally motivated me to get out and do it.

Did you just use a ring attached to the scotchman to pull the trap John ?

We've used this anchor lifter on a scotchman when pulling traps. The ring needs chain to hold the anchor up.

F.Y.I. There is always someone out there prawning, just matters wheather you get the cload of spot prawns comming your way. I talked to a commercial prawner last year who dropped his longlines out front of Victoria...... in a set of 20 traps, about 5 of them in the middle were full and the rest on the outside were empty. Tides and timing are the key...... goodluck

Used an ANCHORLIFTER like the one KEV showed. After unclipping the floats you pass the line thru the lifter tie it to the cleat and pull your 400 ft of line then circle back and get your traps and Scotsman.
Do you know anyone who prawns around here Scott ?

Many, many prawn traps are pulled by good old human power too.

No, tried a couple years ago right off cattle point in about 40' of water
and got some coonstripes.

Here is some more info: try in a sandy area, between 150ft and 350ft, and look for a hole and time it so that you get right in it. I've heard Constance is good at the tide change and after 1hr I've seen a guy get his limit on one trap. William Head is good too, have seen some monster size(or Nootka size) from there. Also try putting 20ft of chain between the traps and make sure you got lots of slack.

I know someone who through his traps out only to have the current sweep them off as they were heading down, and it took the scotsman float down with it. But saying that, you should throw a hard plastic float on as well, and make sure its big enough to hold the weight.

Thanks again for the info. I'm hoping to do some Hali this week will try a couple of traps a little deeper weather permitting.
