Vancouver Area Sockeye Update

Post has already been flagged and deleted black dog.
What was it, the one looking to buy sockeye?

natives began in earnest drift net fishing 4 yrs ago, any of you pointing a finger at recreational fisherman give your head a shake,>> 4 F(&&)^%^ percent<<<. Its no bloody wonder to me that fish numbers are down this year when other sectors are showing inclines, to all buying sockeye, enjoy

I was crossing my fingers that this thread would not go here. FN's have been gill</u>netting salmon in the Fraser for many decades and catching Fraser fish in native only openings from Quesnel to Alert Bay with earnesty (using all types of gear including seines in Johnstone Straight) since 1980 at the latest(this I know; pre-1980 I would be speculating). To blame one group for a decline that has actually taken 16 years seems simplistic.

The term driftnetting to me indicates the many mile long mono gillnets that boats from the other side of the Pacific used at one time in the Northern Pacific to intercept Fraser salmon, sharks, and whatever else got tangled in there thousands of miles from Steveston.

Not really interested in debating this one. It's sad there are no fish, and it's sadder that we are going to once again kick the lowest guys on Totem pole(pun intended) in the nards once again. Yes, I heard about some dumbasses dumping a few hundred fish in PA and in other years in the Fraser Valley.

Cannot seem to be able to cut and paste original ad but here's what it said;

Black Dog , I don't mean to get on your case because I know you didn't mean to do this.....but now you have advertised on here for that guy by including his e-mail address ! It was removed from Craig's list but now that ad selling/trading fish illegally is here on SFBC !!!
Can the moderator remove the address ?

I don't think this guy is going to get alot of sales on this website. I just cut and pasted the ad as written. Maybe someone can sign him up for some spam.
P.S. I alerted DFO to this ad and the e-mail address.

I second Peahead and the actions of BLACKDOG. We don't need or want un solicted sales of any kind on this site - fish inlcuded !!! Moderator please remove him from this thread.

Tubber, you now know the SUCCESS of the technique of Drift gill nets, DFO has models based on returns and this year had all the indications of a bumper crop, enough for everyone. However, illegal drift netting in closed periods and at night have seen the sockeye return go the ****e, put our heads in the sand all we want but the issue remains no fish returning 4 years later. I also believe that sea lice is an important factor but as evidenced of the success of drift nets and the 100s of sets these killers can make during strong pushes its no wonder to me whats happened

I am not crazy about the floss fishing that goes on with recreational fisherman however the fish are caught in the mouth by hook, rod and line.The amount of sockeye taken recreationaly is a fraction of what is net caught. Is driftnetting the upper fraser legal[V]? I understand not! Yet it happens every day in many locations with major success. Imagine a shallow bar loaded with sockeye being drifted with a net across the complete bar what type of numbers are being taken everyday, and this is happening in so many places on so many bars.Are these catches being recorded? Regulation is in serious order here!

nailed it there Jimbo, night time driftnetting and closed period drift netting is un-monitored and therefore not factored into the models

"DFO has models based on returns and this year had all the indications of a bumper crop, enough for everyone"

Surely these models are based on the number of spawners in 2006 and not the number of fish swimming around in the Gulf 700 kilometres from the Horsefly spawning grounds. To my knowledge, this year's fish haven't been caught; they just haven't come back. I agree that unmonitored netting is an unaccepteble practise and I think it's likely that the farms from Campbell River and beyond are another contributing factor. I don't know what the spawning conditions (stream blowouts, temperatures etc...) from fall till spring of that year were like.

A glimmer of hope as apparently the test catches out in the chuck have improved quite a bit over the last few days. It it is still possible the summer-run fish will have quite decent numbers. The next couple of announcements this coming week may provide some even better news. A short opening opening for these summer run fish looks more promising.
