Had the opportunity to browse the project Venus website today while one of the scientists gave a brief explanation of some of the data they collect.

Here's a cool image for the sportfishing community -- it shows the movement of the zooplankton. Note the timescale is UTC. Basically, what you are looking at is an upside down Sonar. Their device is at the bottom of Saanich inlet and shoots up. It's more or less a very expensive fish finder. The inverted U shape shows how the plankton rise to the top at night to feed, and then run for cover to the bottom as the sun comes up and they can been seen by predators. If you study the image closely, you can see how the fish follow the plankton up and down.

One of the really cool images they showed (I can't find it) was the detail of a recreational fisherman's boat on the surface, you could clearly see the outline. You could also clearly pick up the downrigger cable. Unfortunately, he was fishing about 50' above a big school of fish. Pretty cool to see.

Browse away -- it's pretty neat.
