Unlocking an Iphone

I was given an Iphone that I would like to have unlocked, so that I am not necessarily tied to any one service provider. The phone was previously used with the Telus network, so I know it can be unlocked by Telus or Apple, but from what I read on the internet that there are many other places that can unlock the phone. The rates being charged are quite varied. Anyone have any words of advice?

I had mine unlocked through Telus, $30. Thought was cheap enough and they did it right away, log into ITunes and your good to go.

pretty sure any time you switch providers you will need a new sim card. not very expensive (I think Telus charged my wife $10).

I watched the guy do it at a local store for free as long as he was connecting it on the spot.
