Nog...my buddy in Tofino has been out a couple of times this week and said they are getting fish...but mostly the high teens. I would imagine he has been at Portland but don't know for sure.

This is a report as of Tuesday from a friend out of Ukee:

fishing has slowed down, one guy was out at big bank today and just got small chinooks but some nicer halibut but no coho..... outside south has been smaller fish odd high teener or low 20

Have fun I'm going out next thursday/friday:)

Yesterday & today at the wreck. Just got blown off by the gale warning.

Tons of BIG coho. Hatchery and wild to 20+ pounds. The biggest I have ever seen. Hitting purple haze hoochies.

Chinook hitting 6" spoons. Biggest we landed was 25 lbs. I almost got spooled by a big Spring yesterday. There are still some around.

It is awesome fishing out there right now. Weather may let up for a run on Sunday morning. Fingers crossed.

Very much agree-just got back last night from a 3 day fish-all kinds of Springs to 25#, some decent Coho to 20# and some Halibut in the mix too.

And Whales!!!!!</u> and bait like you never saw-what a fabulous place we live in! [8D]

Whales--yeah, what a wonderful part of the La Perouse show. As you guys know, they are also real handy for giving up a valuable secret: they show where the pilchards are and by default, lead you to what's eating them.

Which brings up a question: with all the boating activity, people coming and going with high horsepower engines at big speeds to and from Ucluelet and Bamfield and Tofino, do you ever hear about collisions?

I was out at the Southwest corner last month trying to hover over a school of pilchards. They kept moving around and it was lights out every time I got back over them so I kept up the chase trying to stay on them.

So were two wales. I tried to keep my distance and give them plenty of sea room but I did have one electric moment thsat will be with me for a long while:

I'd just put an Airmar M260 transducer in my boat. That's 1 Kw of power: you can see individual barnacles on the cables holding buoys in place. It's quite a piece of electronics

So all of a sudden my screen goes black. And I mean black as night; the entire screen. Wow, I remember thinking. I just went over the largest school of pilchards I've ever seen.

As I was reaching for my camera to get a screen shot, the bow of my Arima gently lifted towards the sky and directly under my anchor nest a spout of water came up and drenched my wheelhouse.

My dog went nuts--- Talk about up close and personal!

So do you ever hear of boats hitting them? Or is that something nobody would want to talk about.

I've seen pics of collisions in California and Mexico too-Big Boats-Big Damage and probably a dead Whale too.

As to screen shots these are a few of what we saw this weekend (not my pics).

Can't vouch for this being true, but a buddy told me a story about another buddy's whale encounter on the inside Strait. I heard this one a long time ago but I believe he was traveling across the straight from the mainland. I think the boat was in the 25' range and it stuck a whale at speed. He split the hull and began taking on water heavily. He barely made it to shore and beached the boat in the gulf islands. I believe the boat was a right off. Details about thee whale are fuzzy as too what species it was, but I believe he said the collision killed it.

Sorry if these details are a little off, as I heard this story quite some time ago.

I had a Humpy catch my dwnrigger wire and peel off cable and line off the reel for about 20 seconds before letting go. Very scary.

BTW, Carl - don't you just love to fish around bait schools like that? I was there too. :D

I have heard of whales hitting riggers from a couple of members that guide outta Bamfield and heard another bamfield guide hit one and it kicked the engine up but did not roll/damage the boat.

When I see this on my screen I brace my feet and fasten my seat belt:

When I find this inside of what was eating the stuff I saw on my screen I know I successfully matched the hatch:

Made it back out to the Wreck on Sunday morning and it was still going off. Double headers on huge wild (and a few hatchery) Coho all morning. Put a few 20 lb Springs in the box as well. Very much worth the trip out there right now. Purple haze hoochies are the hot ticket.
