We have a steady stream of Canadians coming down here to fish steel. If Nog is correct, that guide requirement would just be for the salt chuck, not freshwater. With all due respect, I'm not convinced this is a boiler-plate requirement and I'm going to do some research
In the meantime, Matt---I have a nice cabin on the banks of the Sol Duc. Right in the middle of all the good stuff. You can come down and fish with me any time, even on Saturdays and Sundays. All you need is a non-res license and you can fish any day of the week for as long as you'd like
Just so you know the knife of goofy regulations cuts both ways: if you were to reciprocate and invite me up to the Skeena system to fish steel this September, if your invite was for a Saturday or a Sunday I'd have to go hang out in a bar until Monday (by which time you and your B.C. resident buds would have hard-mouthed all the fish)
I'm not making this up-- since the early 70's I've been frolicking up there, every year, never missed one season. In the early 90's the anti-Yank sentiment (and anti-Albertan sentiment) started growing. Most of it driven by newby guides and newly minted lodge owners who resented anybody in "their" water. I have some really close friends who live in Smithers and Kispiox (guides) ---they think the whole thing is nuts but the fact is, it's now a regulation in the books.
Let he who lives in a glass house cast the first buzz bomb.....
