Ugly Rumors about guides needed for all out of country fishers

We have a steady stream of Canadians coming down here to fish steel. If Nog is correct, that guide requirement would just be for the salt chuck, not freshwater. With all due respect, I'm not convinced this is a boiler-plate requirement and I'm going to do some research

In the meantime, Matt---I have a nice cabin on the banks of the Sol Duc. Right in the middle of all the good stuff. You can come down and fish with me any time, even on Saturdays and Sundays. All you need is a non-res license and you can fish any day of the week for as long as you'd like

Just so you know the knife of goofy regulations cuts both ways: if you were to reciprocate and invite me up to the Skeena system to fish steel this September, if your invite was for a Saturday or a Sunday I'd have to go hang out in a bar until Monday (by which time you and your B.C. resident buds would have hard-mouthed all the fish)

I'm not making this up-- since the early 70's I've been frolicking up there, every year, never missed one season. In the early 90's the anti-Yank sentiment (and anti-Albertan sentiment) started growing. Most of it driven by newby guides and newly minted lodge owners who resented anybody in "their" water. I have some really close friends who live in Smithers and Kispiox (guides) ---they think the whole thing is nuts but the fact is, it's now a regulation in the books.

Let he who lives in a glass house cast the first buzz bomb.....

Not so sure your rite there Nog, I've been to a few fishing derbies over in Friday harbor in my own rig, been checked by fisheries and us coast guard and never had a problem.

As noted previously:

Of course I stand to be pleasantly enlightened to the contrary, in which case I'll gladly eat my earlier words...

Cheers,
Nog

I was not able to find any language in the most up-to-date fishing regs that indicates requirements for a Canadian stickered sportsfishing boat to hire a US guide while fishing in US coastal waters. Nada.

What it does say:

1)) you cannot harvest Canadian fish and US fish on the same calendar day
2)) you cannot harvest yelloweye rockfish in Canada and bring them back to US waters
3)) you cannot land Canadian origin fish in the US unless there is a legal season for those fish in Canadian waters sanctioned by the DFO

If there's some peripheral language about guides, maybe it's driven by Homeland Security crap, but I'm not convinced.

Homeland Security is used as an umbrella for all kinds of stupidity-- on both sides of the border.

This is true. We can go down there with our own boats, if we wanted to.

All the kerfuffle is about the commercial Tuna war and that's it.

Same as bananas...been to Rosario for the derby...there were a good number of Canucks down there for some freindly comp with the yanks.

Bang on Shawn. The Washington Bloody Decks member's have told me to COME ON DOWN Charlie Brown with zero problems. Bring your rig and go fishing. You still have to buy an out of State license but fill your boots. This is for on the chuck fishing. The tuna thing for sporties down there is still up in the air with me and I am looking into it. If we go down there with a rig we might not even need an out of State license due to the offshore limitations. Still looking into it.

I just got off the phone with a friend who guides Neah Bay and the OlyPen area---as far as he knows, there's no regulatory requirement for a Canadian sportsfisherman to have a US guide when fishing US coastal waters (at least in Washington State).

He asked if maybe I'd help lobby to have such a regulation put in place so his business would increase....

Nog, it sounds like that CO you talked to was blowing smoke, or just trying to keep the competition away.

Would you like lettuce and mayonnaise with those words? :]

Ok...you guys must not have anything better to do...first question is WHY would you want to try and catch fish in US waters(I get the rivers) when all of the really big fish are up north? Just kidding..all of this is nonsense, and anyone who told you you have to have a guide is full of it. We cross all the time over to Sydney/James Island and see our Canandian brethren come over and fish US all the time...just have a proper lic. And punch card and you are good to go. We have been coming up to Ukee and Nootka for about 8 years because it is where the really big fish are, as do A LOT of US guys, and no one is going to throw that away. Nog, where are you going to be this summer since not at The Ukee guide service? We enjoyed following you around...hopefully we'll run into you this summer and get a few of your new spoons!
