Tying Hoochy Direct To Flasher?

There are some people here who tie the hoochy direct to the ring on the back of a flasher.

No hardware,no swivels,no nothing.

Question:- When you do this, what prevents the leader from twisting up on itself?
Or have you noticed that it even does this?
When you play a fish rigged like this , does the line twist up on you?
If you are tying this way...and you have a Siwash/beadswivel inside the hoochy then this wouldn't happen.....but if you are rigging with snelled double salmon hooks......then what?

I imagine tying direct would give the hoochy a lot more "snap/action"?

There is a swivel at the top of the flasher that prevents twisting. This can get clogged with debris so if possible use two barrel swivels.

Aye....thanks.....Kelly. I never have a problem with the main twisting....I use the ball-bearing swivel that comes with the flasher and that is connected to a 132lb. hi-speed swivel.

I meant the leader on the hoochy itself.......

since its only 24"-36" long then i would not worry about it twisting up you know when fishing it if it's a problem

the flasher will impart a lot more action on the hoochie now
i thought of going the same route just check the knot on flasher as the crimped insert may wear on the knot
you could just leave the solder ring in place and not use saves wrecking the flasher it it does not work for you
then no problems reverting back.

It's of no issue tying direct to the Hootchie as you say even in a snelled version of 2 hooks. That said, the lighter you are with the leader line it may happen, although rarely if your careful letting your line out. You will find heavy leader follows the flasher better which in turn changes your action due to length, speed etc. In general, guys are using between 25 and 40 lb. leaders. I do use my hootchies with either a barrel or bead chain swivel then split ring inside the skirt to the Siwash, and will also tie direct to tandem hooks dependent on hootchie, needlefish, mini plankton etc skirts. Lots of different ways to do things. My lengths can be any where from 18" to 42" depending on what I am fishing for and season.

Good luck to you

Hootchies don't rotate like bait so you shouldn't get any twist from the leader end. I run 40lb with hootchies.. the stiffer line will allow the flasher to impart more action to the hootchie...which has no action on its own.

I've been clipping the hoochie to the welded ring, without a swivel, for a few years now. It must be improving the presentation/action, because I've gotten significantly more hits since making that change.

keep turning it up to eleven and good things happen

I believe NautiGirl was making a tongue in cheek reference to my avatar.

Without a swivel, that hoochie is going to be spun around a lot more, I would think. And, FWIW, I've observed an increase in hits since I started rigging them without the swivel...which leads me to conclude there's some kind of significant change in the action.

The flasher does all the work whipping the hootchie, using a heavier leader will impart more action but as far as a swivel between the two ???
can't see it making any difference ?

Seafever and Enniberg- if you have never seen the movie Spinal Tap, there is a scene where the star says the band's amplifier knob was changed out to go up to eleven instead of ten, so they are the loudest and best heavy metal band. Classic.

Thanks for clearing that up.....LOL....

I was thinking that with a swivel on the hoochy leader, the flasher will rotate of course but the swivel will kill off a bit of the "whip"..
With it tied direct, the hoochy will turn over all the time whereas with the swivel it will not respond directly to flasher action.

I'm trying a bit of a compromise......I like to pretie hoochies for quickness of change on the water.

All my flashers have nothing but the welded ring on back ofthem. I cut the swivel off. Done that for years.

But ..before I would put a swivel/clip on the end of each hoochy leader and just clip them on out on the chuck.

Now.....I'm trying leaving the welded ring on the flasher.......and just put a Coastlock snap (with swivel cut off) on the end of the hoochy leader. Measuring leader from back of flasher to nose of hoochy, clip included.

This way I would get more direct pull,no swivel rotation and prerig hoochies to different leader lengths.

I absolutely hate buggering around on the chuck tying stuff...I'm out there to fish not tie gear...LOL.

(Pac Net in Parksville sells these commercial clips also.....awesome....they are quite small, diamond shaped, and are 200lb test.
Come in a box of 100. I've used them many a time and they are virtually bulletproof........I'll post a pic or two).

I don't like "scissor clips....fine and dandy on land with dry fingers......but if you have any oil on your hands they are a bee-otch to open I find.

Here's a pic:- the small clip on the left is a Pac Net commercial clip.
I just wrap quick-tie around line with apiece of masking tape telling me what length the leader is from back of flasher to nose of hoochy clip/ring included. I re-use them.
