Tuna Talk

Just a heads up. I was in PNT today and they are massively expanding there tuna tackle section. A bonus is they are packaging zuker clones, feathers, and brooms in singles! Yaaaayyyy. They had the singles on the wall already but most of the new stuff will be coming in shortly. Apparently they will have lot's of Rapala Xrap's and other goodies.

There is a whole glass case full of new Accurate reels in pink (just for Pippen lol), blue, and silver. They are the Dawg models with the triple dawg type drag system. Big time fish stoppers for such small reels. Most of them looked like two speeds. They will be getting the new single drag Fury models in shortly that compete very well with the Avet's.

Did I mention I hate that store lol:p;).

I love the store its my wallet that hates it!!. Thanks for the heads up on the singles..

I am hoping that they have some 4.5 inch feathers and some smaller hooks to go with them!!!

Score!!!: 5 inch feathers rigged!!

Funny cuz I don't like the black so I may be willing to sell some but I do want to try them!!!

And a little tip about buying this stuff from the US, always get it shipped to a mailing address. This avoids the unpredictable brokerage fees, so far for me.

I've found Boone products to be quite cheaply made and the colours run quite easily-maybe it won't be so bad in our colder water.

Feathers of any kind used in this application are subject to fading and color blending thats for certain. Guess I'll be the lab rat here. Really tho, that price is unbeatable and I have a passion for smaller lures for tuna. Now I am set!! That basically is the spectrum of colors I use to except for the black. The only one missing is a all green.
I'll still fly that black tho!!!!lol

FYI

Harbor Chandler in Nanaimo will now be selling Avet reels; the first shipment will be coming in for the Boat show and available at the Chandler after the show! Prices seem to be comparible or slightly less than buying online.

I bought two off of them last year and yup they were the same price as most online retailers. I love both of those reels and will be looking for a couple more reels this year. The HX two speed is an awesome tuna and halibut double duty reel.

Anyone know the legalities around livebait? I really want to try it!

I don't know if it would really matter 50 miles offshore lol. Have you looked into cast nets? You can legally catch your own with a cast net. The mesh has to be a certain size. There can be lot's of bait in the sound. Bait tank, plumbing for bait tank, room for bait tank. I think I'm going to give chumming a solid try this year. The live bait for up here seems like a pain (but would be worth it if you pulled it off).

We tried chumming with dead chovies last year, still have about #100 left for next summer. Apparently dead chum works and chunk bait catches fish but we didn't have much success on it. The big problem with dead bait is that you need to do it on a really calm day without much wind drift as unlike live chovies for some reason the dead ones want swim with the boat hehehe. We have a large bait tank on board but filling it on the west coast of vancouver island is challenging. It would be really cool to cast net up some herring or chovies in the inlet and give them a go. This seems like a lot of work though the payoff could be pretty excellent.
