Tuna Charter

Regarding the TC 25 mile limit, from Mr. Borris himself when I enquired about doing it, his exact words to me were "There is no class of passenger carrying vessel that can operate more then 25 miles from any shoreline, not ferry, not a whaleboat, or anything".

Not that this is going to be a big deal for anyone who really wants to go anyway, you may have to do something where you operate as part of the crew?

What is the limit on Tuna?
Is there any other tasty creatures that far off shore?

Cheers All,

Dealing with TC can be an exercise in frustration. The boat I was planning on using - forty-two foot commercial fishing boat - is not acceptable to TC despite the Captain having used it for the past 20 years as far as 230 miles off WCVI. In fact probably very few boats would meet TC outside of the 25 mile limit. Had TC tell me that I could not even take friends over 25 miles offshore, in my boat, even if we were not on a charter because my boat is commercially registered. We had a rather 'animated' conversation over that.

So I am now researching one boat that might be acceptable to TC. I have a few other ideas for a tuna trip and I am determined to make this happen. Give me another few days as I have a meeting Wednesday in Vancouver for BC Outdoors Pro Staff where we will be discussing this.

On a personal note: It is very encouraging to see so much enthusiasm for this type of charter. I know so many don't care about the rules but I have to be very careful that we follow them. So...if there are exceptions or loop-holes ... I will investigate them but cannot/will not break the regs.

The limit for tuna is 20/person.

Hope this helps.

Well the chatter around this has died down but with the interest shown just on this little internet backwater I sure see an opportunity for someone</u> (fishing guide or whoever) to start running Tuna Charters off WCVI.

Something else-what Transport Canada or the Coast Guard doesn't know won't hurt them, Salmon charters are out 25+ miles daily in good weather.[8D]

Hey Gimp-- what is the cost per person for the tuna trips?

It says 575.00 for 2 days.

Cheers All,

The pricing we are envisioning for tuna charters will be about $500/person based on 4 fishing and one long day. Still working diligently on this and we are making some progress. I am not giving up as I am wanting to do this as much as anyone else! And yes, while there is an opportunity for tuna south of us, would like to believe that we can do it just as well (or better) right here at home.

Fishing guide where were you thinking of departing out of.

Cheers All,

Was thinking of using Ucluelet as base of operations as there is great salmon, halibut to be had in addition to tuna.

If you dont mind a pro salmon farming guy tagging along I would definately be interested in booking this. I actually have 2 friends who would join me (ok bodyguards).

I would absolutely be in. What an opportunity! Thanks for working to put this together. Great value at the $500 price point...

LOL your funny I would fish with you and we would have an agreement not to mention fish farms :D

Cheers All,

Ever notice that, once on the water, so much of the politics that seperate us into factions on land, melt away as all aboard enjoy the fishing at hand? I believe there is room on board from those from all walks of life for it is our diversity which actually makes us stronger. We are receiving inquiries from as far away as California for a tuna trip that could also encounter salmon /or halibut.

Still working on this and hope to be able to make some announcements soon!

Cheers All,

BC Outdoors Pro Staff meeting was postponed until next week (in Vancouver) so it will be a few more days before I will have some information.

It is interesting to note that the ocean temp this past winter was 2 degrees colder than normal.

Yeah, a La Nina year. Good for salmonids, not so good for nearshore tuna. I'm sure there will still be plenty around, might just have to go a little further.
