Hi guys so I took some pics on how I conversted the handles over to different bigger ones took me forever to get some handles.... if you happen to get some good on you not really that hard to do just time consuming and fidding.
After I had it dremeled out I used 5 min epoxy to "set" the set screw into place because once its ground all the threads are gone.

On the cork. I do that about every month or so takes about 2 mins to do put a little on spread it on the cork then I wipe any excess off with a paper towel.
Havent had a problem since I do this every 4 weeks I like to keep my stuff clean and in order not to the point of OCD LOL but in order.

Thanks for the info, Wolf. I've been wanting to do this for a while. Still worried about hack jobbing the reel though... Let me know how it feels with the new handles after you take it out for a spin!

Already did one at the start of the year, thats why decided to do all of them now. bigger handles worked out better than expected.
Really not that hard to do once you go for it LOL I know just a bit scary knowing you cant go back. if you screw up.

If you are able to find handles and you want to do it give me a call ill help you out.

Hey Wolf....looks good. I would be a bit nervous too about the "ooops" and the "point of no return". ;)

On the "screw side" of the handle, you basically if I am seeing correctly just make a "countersink" type hole in the backside of the reel to let the screw have enough clearance on the handle side?

I am going to see how my delicate little mits like the new Trophy next week in Kyuquot and then may definitely look to changin' them up. I had done it on my Shimanos and really did notice a difference.

The handles look as though they are used....did you just look for something of a certain size or something with enough "clearance" to allow them to still spin freely once mounted? Actually....I guess that also is the "countersink" to allow for that.

Have you had any issues with the one you did earlier in the season or anything you did different this time based on your first attempt?

Thanks for taking the time to post this up. [8D]

Great idea. Have you ever done that with an Islander? Their handles suck just about as much as those Trophys. Could never figger that out why build a nice reel and then put 'kiddie' handles on it!?

Wolf, where did you get the replacement handles from?

I have a North Coast Rapalla reel that I would like to replace the handles on. On a side note I heard you can get bigger replacement handles for Islanders but they are $30 each?!?! (dont know if this is true or not).

Long live wild salmon!!!
><))))>

LOL they are the flat islander handles and finding them WAS hard to do, but in my opinion worth it tried them today and AWESOME.

Pippen just found the handes a bit small(have you seen my fingers) LOL.

Whole in the Water - I have the North Coast from Rapala as well and I had a set of Islander's MR3 nobs lying around so I switched them over. It's WAY nicer and the switch was REALLY easy.
Just unscrew the screw and take the old nobs off, but leave the posts in.
Take the new Islander MR3 nobs and a drill bit that fits the inside diameter of the whole on the nobs. GENTLY drill down a little bit at a time in the nob till you get it so that the Islander nobs fit snugly on the posts with the part where the screw going in being LEVEL with the post.
Screw the screw in and Presto you're done!

Wolf.....the pictures certainly don't do your fingers the "justice" they deserve!! [:p] ;) Were they in cold water??? [:o)]

Ha ha..........hope to have a postive report on the new Trophy Reel upon my return next week.

Yeah haze i did measure the posts and handles but really coudnt be done the that way on the trophy the posts are way longer and I would have had to drill the handle twice and the ew handles woudnt fit on the trophy bases easier to change one thing then many,
like them so far .

So after a week of fishing with the new handles must admit like the paddles very much as now it forces people to use there fingertips and not there fingers like a crank if you know what I mean...way better.
Now get out there and fish!!!

On another note, I have been trying to get my trophy to sing. I checked out the islander website and was trying to follow the instructions on there but my clicker continues to sound louder on the retrieve than on the runs.

Any pointers would be great.

Ok got it, thanks for that wolf.

I'd like to see that new tool as that seems to be the trickiest part. I just spooled up recently so maybe I can get one more fish out of the one reel before I change it out. I'll order the paddle handles so I have them on hand.

thanks Wolf,

just got my handles done, the new tool is perfect way to do this job of countersinking

If you search Putting Rubber handles on Islander, my post, #20 will show you how to do it for about $5 in parts. You can get the larger handles from Shimano or you can pay Wildthing $20 for the packet he'd put together.
