Trollmaster

Is any one using a trollmaster on their kickers?
I would appreciate any feedback, both pro and con.
Thanks,
AlK

I have a TrollMaster that I used for the first time on Saturday. Easy to install, even for a non mechanical guy like me. It worked great and and I love it so far. It is very sensitive so I can make very minor adjustments in RPM's that would be tough to do with the throttle handle. When I hook up, I just push the run/idle button and it slows down the RPM's. When the time comes to put the lines back in the water I hit run/idle button again and the RPM's go right back to where it was when I hooked up. No more guessing on what the speed was when I hooked up. Let me know if you have any questions.

They aren't wireless. I've mounted the controller right next to my helm seat. The model I bought is the Pro II. Here is their web site:

I bought mine direct through TrollMaster but they can be found other places as well. Here is a Cabela's site: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp;jsessionid=1ZGG55WQKHPBVLAQBBKCCO3MCAEFKIWE?id=0030614018202a&type=product&cmCat=froogle&cm_ven=data_feed&cm_cat=froogle&cm_pla=0240401&cm_ite=0030614018202a&_requestid=91171

I just bought and installed one of these myself for my 17 whaler.
It was really easy to install and works great so far.
I was a bit worried when I opened the box, the unit looked a bit 'homemade'. But it works just fine.

Slabby20,
What do you get with the ProII compared to the standard?

Do you get full throttle(i.e. WOT to Idle) with the trollmaster?

Is the price better from Trollmaster than Cabela's?

Thanks,
AlK

I spoke with the owner before ordering and decided to go with the Pro II as it was the newest model with some improvements. I took the following from the Cabelas site and it matches what the owner told me. (The Pro II model allows a momentary burst of full throttle for correcting your heading quickly or jumping to a desired spot. It adds 10 times the micro adjustments in speed over the Original TrollMaster™ Pro. Installs easily and won't interfere with manual motor operation. Requires less than 2 amps for a reduced battery load. Control panel has a 25-ft. cable).

As far as cost from the factory vs. other sites I don't know. I can be impulsive when I buy something and I didn't do much shopping around. I just talked to Bill, the owner and ordered it. I suggest you call Trollmaster direct and have him quote you a price for the unit you need and then compare that with the other prices you find.

For anyone who is interested. If you purchase direct from Trollmaster you pay $20 less than at Cabela's. Shipping to Pt. Roberts is $4.95.

I put one on my 4hp and works great; it’s been installed for over 3 years without any major issues.

What I didn't like: it changed the throttle angles and geometry causing the throttle handle to need less rotation and not utilizing the throttle stop. I broke the cheap linkage arm that came with the unit because of this.

Also if you have it on an acc. switch make sure the switch is on, allowing the actuator to "0" before starting the engine. If not you could be starting your engine at a full throttle or higher throttle than normal.

It’s quirky but you will get use to it.

I am just so tired of always adjusting the throttle to hit the sweet spot. I was on another members boat last summer and ever since its been on my mind. Today I decided to start tracking one down but it doesn't seem available in Canada so much.
