Trim/Tilt Motor Question

2013 Yamaha OB 115HP Trim/tilt motor has been getting worse this summer. Originally it was just when trimming down for the bottom 1/3 (trim), but today the motor was a slower to trim up. Goes very slow when trimming down even with the motor running. Have cleaned and check all connections to battery, Fluid level is fine, I have tested and ruled out the relay, and the motor works better when I tap on it during trimming. Anything else it could be before I go spend a few hundred on a new trim/tilt motor?

Motor stator is failing internally unfortunately your gonna have to pull the pin on the trim motor imo :(

The reason it moves better when hitting is because your shocking it past the restriction and all the build up of magnetic material, same goes when starter motors fail give em a smack and sometimes they come back to life for a short period.

x2. went thru this myself in the spring. hopefully you can access all the bolts holding the trim motor down to the valve body assembly.
i honestly can’t believe how corroded it was inside the old trim motor.

it worked until it didn’t.

Additionally, here’s hoping the bolts come out of the valve body assembly. mine did not and i ended up having to buy an all new valve body assembly as each stainless bolt snapped off. total nightmare. i have an etec, so different configuration. i had to remove lower cowling to route the wiring harness back around to the trim solonoid.

Similar symptoms and I got lucky once with just hitting the tilt tube with grease. It was a nipple that I had missed in my routine maintenance because it was hard to see. Long shot probably. But worth a think.

Anecdote to relate. My Yamaha dealer told me every participant on a Yamaha service course he attended was given a broken tilt trim unit to work on when they chose during the course. Bottom line, his and most or all the others were unfixable in the end. I chose to replace mine.

Thx fellas. $875 to replace from Sherwood but needs to come outta Japan. There is the option to try to get it repaired locally here in town. Think I’m just gonna ride dirty and try to limp it along for another couple coho trips then order a new one.

Be sure you are familiar with the location of the release screw and have screw driver available incase it gets stuck up or down.

Timely post. Going thru this right now with the T&T on my Honda 30. The motor runs, hydraulic fluid full, and the relays work but the ram won't go up and struggles to go down. After 17 years of good service, I think I'll order a new T&T unit. What might interest people with trim motor issues is talking to Brian Roberts Auto Marine Electric (Victoria) this morning, they rebuild Trim motors. Hope this helps someone. Ted

I called them as well. Chatted with a couple
Folks about fixing mine and Opted for an Amazon unit for $150 instead. Can’t stomach $1000 right for that little unit. Perhaps in a couple years 😂.
