transducer question

1) Does anyone know if I can can use the existing 50/200 transducer that is already wired and attached to my boat with my new Lowrance Elite 5 combo which came with a smaller, cheaper 83/200 transducer? The unit does have a split display for 83/200 on one of the possible pages.

It seems to run fine in the garage.

2) If the answer to 1 is yes, has anyone ever spliced on a new connector at the unit end or mid wire. The existing one seems to have "rotted" around the 6 pins and would be tricky to plug in in low light and would likely wiggle loose in chop.

Are you sure the old one is better? I would personally want new to go with new, especially if there are already issues with the wire. Who knows where else along that run corrosion is happening?? But, you probably could use it. I just wouldn't. Oh and you need to be careful running sonar out of water, they can heat up and fry themselves.

I've always cut the transducer wires at the plug ends. (about a foot before the plug) I don't want to drill a huge hole in the transom to feed the wire through. A big multi wire plug is can also be more difficult to fishwire up from the stern to the unit. I have always just taken the boat down to Greg at Victoria marine Electric to get it soldered and sealed back in place.
