Trailer tires Victoria

This tires cracked. It’s 5 years old. it’s got decent tread although I’m noticing inside wear on it. I’ve gotta do 600km next month. I’m assuming this tires done? Any ideas on trailer tire shops in Victoria? I’ll take off the wheels and take it in. And, what about mis-matched tires? Any rules?

Get it fixed asap. That’ll delay/ruin a trip fast. Had this happen coming back from Winter Harbour last summer. Happened in a good spot fortunately but I knew something was up with that tire but ignored it. Ripped apart my fender and mounts. Cost more than it should have. I used Kal Tire on Sooke Rd, but I’ve used Integra Tire by the casino as well.

As far as mismatched tires, I think it’s not recommended due to the uneven wear on both tires. Can create poor tracking. I replaced both, bought a new rim and used my extra tire as a 2nd spare. Doesn’t hurt to have two spares especially when I tow the length of the island. And I use a tire cover now when the trailer is parked to help protect the rubber from the sun.

Huh, this is interesting, from Bridgestone:

"Many drivers are not aware that minimally used tires, like the ones on recreational vehicles, collectible cars, or even spare tires, tend to experience aging instead of wearing, due to a lack of driving. An aged tire has a substantial amount of tread; however, the structural integrity of the tire is weaker because the tire needs to be driven for the chemicals in the rubber to remain effective."

I knew they degraded with time but wasn't aware regular use helped to extend the life. Seems like the major manufacturer recommendations are to start looking for signs of degradation at 5 years and replace at 10 years no matter what. 5 or 6 years is a very common life expectancy for tires, regardless of use.

Sounds like you've solved your issue, but I'll add my two cents.

Supplier - Tires Unlimited on Gorge [now owned by Sidney Tire] - honest service - they'll tell you what you don't need as well as what you do. I've dealt there for 30+ years.

Mismatched tires - Except when I have to put on a spare, I run matched tires on each axle, but can be different between axles. When I had to replace two of five, it was suggested I run heavier duty on the rear axle which carries more weight on my trailer.

Getting new rubber on mine as I write. 6 year old tires. Showing side wall wear, and some uneven tread wear…not a big expenditure for quite a lot of mind ease towing the highway to the island in a month.

Yes - I've experienced what happens when you lose a tire halfway between Woss and Port McNeill. Nothing worth repeating.

X2 and X2 lol, different trailers, almost same spot, long straight section of hyway, luckily no damage to trailers, felt like I was in a nascar pit crew changing out the tire, was heading fishing dam it!! Hah
Kaltire McNeil replaced 2 (single axle) 1st time, 4 tires (tandem) the 2nd time before I headed for home after trips were over
Majority of time you'll find its the right tires that blow, more crap on right sides of roads

I have had several failures due to cord separation. My failures didn't go catastrophic because I check the tires for out of round condition. Tandem and tridem trailers subject tires to huge lateral loads when maneuvering. This can pop cords in the tire making them get out of round and eventually failing. The tread and tire carcass can appear visually fine. It's worth it if you have the resources to lift your trailer and check tires for out of round condition before a long trip. While you have it slightly in the air wiggle your bearings to check there condition also. The forward axles are subjected to the most lateral stress.

I had a brand new spare mounted on the upright mast of my trailer blow apart 2 years ago. A brand new unused tire. The tread area blew out an area about 12 inches long. Just from sitting in the sun on a hot day. It had 50 lbs pressure. The recommended amount. Blew me away and the tire tread. I just question the quality of some of these Chinese produced tires.

I think almost all the trailer tires are Chinese produced now. I went into my local tire shop to get 4 new tires a couple years ago and he said they can't get ahold of north American or Japanese trailer tires. The chinese manufacturers own that market now.
