towing 12,000lb boat, with gas pot?

I’ve towed up to 8k lbs around southern BC and Washington State for work, used a bunch of different trucks, including an Ecoboost F-150. All of the gassers lacked power, with the exception of the Ecoboost, but it drank fuel. Less than 10 mpg. The Duramax dually was hands down the best tool for the job going over the Coquihalla.

4k more lbs, and the significant increase in drag from a boat would be slow going in anything other than the most powerful modern V8 gassers imho. If I had to do it more than a couple times a year, I’d get the diesel.
 
You guys are forgetting the most important fact about diesel trucks… they sound awesome and damn fun to drive! A new gas truck probably tows more than my 2011 3500 but the old diesel is much more comfortable and happy when towing

The duramax 6.6L hands down will always out pull and out tow a gasser. Plus why put a gasser through all that rpm and stress just to come to the conclusion of needing a diesel.
Wife drives the 6.6 with big camper I drive the gas pot towing the boat. That how we roll nice and legal
 
6.7 Powerstroke here.

Loaded with boat and camper and gear and it's like it isn't even there, pass slow rigs on hills at will. Engine brake is awesome, barely touch the brakes on hills.

Don't like the emissions? Delete it. Even my local Ford dealer does deletes.

Oil changes too expensive? Do your own. Rotella T6 pails go on sale and there's a $40 rebate back from Shell right now. $120 for 1.25 oil changes.

Upfront cost of a diesel is eventually recouped in fuel savings and you're enjoying the diesel that whole time.
 
That's the IDI 7.3, not the turbo model either.

That thing is cool but way way overpriced.

I've seen mint 7.3 Powerstrokes for less than 1/2 that and really, I think that's still too much.
Yes. I remember those old bench seat 7.3 power strokes back in the day diamond drilling. Felt pretty amazing compared to my S10 back home, but now compared to truck 33 years newer, the comfort and safety are just not comparable.

Yeah I an F-250 gasser from that era, but it’s a 2nd vehicle/tow rig/toy. If I needed it for work or commuting I definitely would not be driving that haywagon
 
Towed 10k back from Alberta with a ram 3500 diesel. It did not notice the hills. The best part though was the exhaust brake. Just cant be beat. Did not have to touch the brakes on downhills.

If price is a factor go used or lease return. I got my 2500 diesel for 12k and have put 230k on it.. it's over 500 now and still going. Covid is over and money's not as cheap as it was. People are selling their toys and there are deals to be found if you wait.
