Tomic Broken Back

Yes they work very well and I can't understand why they aren't more popular.

These came with single hooks IIRC bought special order from Berry's in Richmond since they don't carry them in regular stock.

Or maybe not maybe the Berry's ones were lost and these were purchased out of the remainder bin @ Nikka since they look different from the ones as linked-too many years/too much gear for sure I changed the colour with magic markers as you can see.

I had a bunch made for fresh water fishing but have never tried them in the Salt. I have always thought that the Coho would like them at least. Might have to give them a go this year....

Never really run them for Springs. My favorite colour is the 158. As far as Salmon goes they've taken coho and chum. I use them them the most in freshwater. Pike love them. They work really well in big lakes on rainbows and dolly varden/bull trout.

Kinda sad their not sold in most stores these days. They are an awesome casting lure if you find coho on top, or for big toothy Pike up north.

Pike fishing up north is exactly what I bought these ones for. These colors are what I thought were good Perch and Frog patterns . I did remove the trebles but this was a picture of some of my order from Tomic when they arrived. I haven't used them too much but the action is good. They are almost too nice to use for Big Nasty Pike now that I have them....lol

If anyone has any of these lures and might be willing to part with maybe a couple of them (even 1 or 2), please PM me

Going to be fishing Pike at the end of the month.

Ooooh! Speaking my language, these look awesome. I have tried Tomics and J plugs a couple of times with no luck.

I need to take my aggression out on pike and walleye for a couple more weeks before hitting the salt. This was a 17.75 lber last fall.View attachment 28043

Nice Pike Prarie Locked. Did you try the broken back Tomic plugs for the Pike, or were you using the standard one piece models. I'm far from an experienced Pike fisherman, but they sure seemed to like the broken back 158 model in all the lakes and rivers I was casting it about. Caught a few monsters up to 20 pounds on them in the territories. Up there it was pretty near a Pike a cast. My kids loved it, I found it lost any kind of challenge really fast.

The broken back produced in almost any of the lakes I was travelling to, and because of its size it tends to catch the bigger fish. Very nice saltwater lure that is near indestructible in freshwater. Those Pike put a lot of scratches on the surface, but that 158 still fishes hot dam.

Hey B.G, thanks, just the standard one piece. I don't have any of the broken back models but would sure love to get my hands on some.

I'm not that fortunate as fishing pressure is too high. This one was on Lake Wabamun, it's less than half an hour from Edmonton city limits. Probably heading there on Monday or Tuesday for the day since it's close, I'll take out the regular Tomics that I do have and give them a whirl and report back!

Not sure about throwing the regular Tomic plugs at the toothy critters, Prarie Locked. They just don't have the same frantic action like the broken back Tomics have.

I guess you could always mail order some of the broken back Tomic plugs direct from the factory, but I don't know if they a have a large minimum quantity on their orders.

Good luck fishing.

True to a point, that's where the skill of the fisherman comes in :D. I actually think they might have some value since they float to act as a top water 'popping plug' which can be effective for those guys. Who know's, I'll give it a try, especially if nothing else is working.

Hey @wayne marwood, do you use these as a top water lure, off a down rigger, or both? Also, do you leave the trebles on or change out to a single and, if so, what size works best?
Thanks!

Sorry to intrude, I can not answer for Wayne, but I can tell you how I have used them in freshwater. I have used the broken backs both ways, topwater and off the riggers. Sometimes with singles, but mostly with smaller trebles, depending on the regs for the lake. I feel they feel they maintain the balance of the lure better with trebles. Some lakes require using only one single hook, and in my opinion the brokenbacks don't fish as well that way.

I don't remember using brokenbacks in Cowichan Lake the times I've fished there, but I have used other saltwater gear there with great success. A size 000 Luhr Jensen mooching dodger with a 1 1/2 inch to 4 inch size Apex works great in Cowichan Lake and many other lakes with big trout and char.
