Tolls to be eliminated on Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges

Now I'm trying to recall which tax/es the BC Liberals enacted to recoup the revenue stream lost when they suddenly axed the Coquihalla toll. Personally I would prefer to see tolls on new infrastructure until the asset is paid off. We should have had a toll on the floating bridge in Kelowna too.

So the rest of the province will have to pay for the poor ole Vancouver commuters, brilliant, let the tax games begin. Well seeing as i live on the island i think i will ask my mla Mr. Horgan to give all us islanders a break on the ferry rates

I've always thought that the toll on the Coquihalla should never have been axed. We were all used to paying it and that money should've gone directly BC MSP.

Seems to be a viscous game. Liberals spend a decade or more cutting spending and putting together surplus budgets and it only takes the socialists a few weeks to blow it all in a great big spending spree. #itsrainincash .................Yeah Ok I know it a forum and hastags are stupid, but I just had to..........

MSP? Aren't we the only province that pays for msp???

But yeah they should have kept that toll. I always liked taking the forestry roads to bypass it.

The original intent on the Coquihalla tolls was to remove them when the capital cost of the highway had been recovered. That was also the intent of the tolls on the Golden Ears and the Port Mann.

Subsidized! As are all bridges highways and all other forms of transit? Major ferry routes are self supporting in fact generate profit, minor ones are not. But tell me which bridge, bus , city bus,sky train, Westcoast express, Inland Ferry, sea Bus , highway etc Breaks even?

Still baffles me how the Ferries need to be subsidized.

$600 for a round trip with boat to nanaimo!

Just goes to show that the Government has absolutely no idea how to be innovative or efficient.

The major routes are not subsidized - in fact they make money. It is all of the minor routes that attract the subsidies.

I was merely pointing out to jackel that there already are some subsidies to ferries, I'm all for transit of all types being subsidized at least to some degree. I thought the tolls were a good idea to a point but agree with the ndp on scrapping these 2 tolls even though i am no fan of the ndp or horgan. I didn't think the people that had to use them to commute to work should have had to pay them.

No one is ever happy in this province.

This is the best province in Canada and it tiring listening to how NDP sucks and how liberals split the atom.

Sorry just wearing me out lately. It just seems to spill on every topic in forum.

I hear you, but people commute via ferries as well. Goods are shipped back and forth via ferries and the costs of those ferries is passed on to the end user. I just find it hard to believe how quickly people dismiss ferries as a part of transit system or as a floating bridge. Oddly enough the Government is offering a 15% discount on minor routes ( net losers)to accompany their 25% experience card discount, no bridge tolls ( write off)and a freeze on increases on the major routes.( break even or make money)Whose getting subsidized. Whose buying votes.

Pretty funny you guys on the island are even talking about bridge tolls lol. There isn't a bridge there lol. Let's talk about subsidizing ..... mainlanders have been subsidizing you since day 1...... the island is a luxury of the mainland. At the end of the day the island really does nothing for the province of bc. Tell me what $ does it put into the province? Yes I mean per capita End of the day VI is just another expense for us mainlanders to pay for. My2cents

I see --- and the metro Vancouver transit system (buses, skytrain, sea bus, west coast express) is a real money maker, requiring no subsidies at all from provincial and federal taxpayers. We're talking billions for the Port Mann, Golden Ears, Alex Fraser and the Patullo replacement isn't going to be cheap. The population of Vancouver Island is about 750,000. That's a lot of taxpayers. Island forest and fishing industries drove the economy of BC for a long time.
Face it, FS - you're a troll!

Just playing the devils advocate here...

750k on an island about the size of Britain. There will be a shortfall in taxes.

BUT I digress....
