To UV or Not ???

Being the owner of many nice plugs and spoons that were produced before the new UV coatings, I have considered either updating some lures, or using a UV product on my existing lures, such as UV Blast which puts a coating on the finish.

Questions: 1) has anyone done used UV Blast and what was their experience? 2) is UV finishes more effective under certain conditions such as low light or ___ feet deep? 3) can UV be a "turn off" under certain conditions?

thanks for your thoughts on this. DAJ

we've fished UV lures, Glow lures, and regular lures all at the same time and to be honest, we've only noticed small improvements with the UV, I would definitely say if you have the choice go UV or at least glow but I wouldn't say you need to completely revamp the tackle box.
Our best UV success has come from the white lightening coho killer.

I'm not sure about the UV blast stuff

Don't stop reelin!

UV Blast work and stays on, but be cautious with plastic flashers. Overspray may damage the finish.

Too much water, too little time

I use UV and glow lures when fishing before/after the sun comes up/down, on dark cloudy days and when fishing more than 100 ft.
When we go underwater, water absorbs the wavelengths of light one by one as you get deeper.
- Red will disappear at a depth of around 15 to 20 feet.
- Orange at between 25 to 30 feet
- Yellow at 45 to 60 feet
- Green at around 70 feet
At 100 feet, everything will appear blue or grayish green
at extreme depths all the light will be absorbed and everything will appear deep blue or black.

I think it is also important to have enough dark/light color contrast in lures as this is known to attract fish as most bait fish have a light and dark side. My 2 bits.

Long live wild salmon!!!

thanks for the comments. zmanszmail I wont revamp the tackle box, but I hardly have any UV stuff so the question probably is "do I spray this stuff on to have the benefits of UV at the risk of perhaps enhancing the older lures to much"? We all know in certain cases there can be to much visibility/flash/glow, and hence the question.

Hey dance:
I've been goofing around with using UV blast and also Fool a Fish and also Fish Eye paints and sprays.
Here's my two bits.
All that stuff only lasts so long and then it flakes, chips or eats your gear and sometimes it just ruins an already great thing.
So leave your time proven gear alone. If you want some UV stuff go out and buy a few packs of the UV hootchies like the Electric Chair, or Purple Haze, or Splatter Backs with UV bottoms and then maybe buy 1-2 flashers that are UV, and if you need a plug that's UV, Tomic makes a UV 530 and 530g series in various sizes (works when the time is right too).
I haven't had too much luck with UV spoons, but if you decide you absolutely need one of those too, well don't worry your local tackle shops have a variety of those too.
But like I said, instead of messing with stuff you know works, add one or two new things to the mix for dark cloudy days, or deep fishing conditions, or really murky water that's that ugly brown color.
This way you like the rest of us fishermen get to chew your teeth on something new, and get that giddy little school girl feeling when you discover a new "slayer", your local tackle shop will make a buck or two AND your timeless classics can still catch fish when the conditions are set up for them to do so.

for me it all depends on where your fishing say knight inlet for example is very cloudy water due to glacial runnoff compared to clear west coast VI waters i prefer anything glow but if im fishing in less then 100 feet of water i dont bother with uv or glow options on lures. just my two cents take it or leave it.

tight lines

So far this year Ive caught 3 springs on a uv teaser head and anchovy. Its outfished my old standby green teasers and hootchies. Starting to think there may be something to this uv stuff, but have never used a spray or paint before.

My most productive flashers have been a couple of homemade jobbies using some cheap blank UV flashers I picked up in the sale bin. I just added some green and silver coloured flasher tape and voila! I often get better results with this than the store bought ones.

Tried fool a fish with chovies. Rigged a few teasers up, sprayed them
and hung them to dry. A hassle but they got more action.

Ah Shiat! Pretty Balls?! Heck..just put a mirror ball down there! ;) LOL!!!

Pretty Balls? That's too easy a target for a ton of bad jokes :Dfor an old punster like me. Oh heck, has anyone ever been told asked if they have pretty balls? [:0] :D

Too much water, too little time
