to bonk, or not to bonk ?

squaretailer you say to shut down the commercial fleet and you praise the skeena there is more commercial activity on the skeena i'm not a commercial guy but have friends who are. and they have an opening on the skeena on 1.5 2. million fish. where as down here they don't have an opening on 8 million fish so before you go pointing fingers at the commercial guys I think its time you have a good look around i.e.. poaching, natives, dfo, lodges. I would like to know how many salmon the lodges, guides take a year. On seiners they have to brail all their fish and sort all the coho, springs, and steelhead and get fined if they don't. then let's look at the native thing. the tswassenn band gets I think 80,000 food and ceremonial fish for a band of 400 do the math. I would get sick of eating fish and I love fish.

I thought this was about Bonking...or not.

I believe in eating what we catch or shoot, we have family in the OK and Manitoba, so we also fish for them. We love fish and will eat it at least once a week, so for me I fish for three reasons, first for food, second for the time with family and third, it is theraputic. The last two reason means I do not need to catch a fish everytime.

I think that sometime we forget why we are out there, instead we focus on the tyee, or # of fish or some other thing. Go out, have fun and forget about what the rest of the world is doing.

Cheers

I was priviliged to grow up in the Gulf Islands, we lived on a lake that regularly produced trout and bass over 5 pounds. When you live on a lake you tend to have a lot more consideration for the amount of fish you take from it. I learned to only keep fish that were badly hooked or bleeders to eat. Catch and release has been a well accepted practice in freshwater for many years. Perhaps because anglers realize that the population within any lake is limited, and to keep the fishing good you must limit your take.

Saltwater anglers seem to have a much harder time grasping this concept. Many saltwater species are migratory, so it's far easier to imagine the fish we are depleting are someone elses fish, so it's Ok. The Alaskans take a huge proportion of our Salmon feeding in their waters. But hey thats OK in their minds, cause they're depleting our stocks. We take fish all the way down the coast, but they're all passing through, so we figure we're probably not depleting our fishing areas. Well guess what, it is depleting our fishing areas.

Where I grew up in the Gulf Islands, the fishing in that lake is not what it used be. However, the saltwater locations I grew up fishing have fared far worse. Active Pass, Sansum Narrows, Cowichan Bay are mere shadows of there former great Salmon fishing. I'd go so far as to say most people wouldn't even waste their time fishing those locations anymore. Does anyone remember where the world record saltwater Coho was caught? Cowichan Bay used to be the premier Coho fishing location in the province. Cowichan Bay world record Coho was over 32 pounds, when Cowichan Bay is open now you'd be lucky to get a fish. Forget catching a 30 pound Coho, most places these days you're lucky to catch a spring that's 32 pounds.

It's easy to point the finger at everyone else. Sure, habitat degradation, fish farming, commercial fishing, native netting, poor fisheries management and other factors all contribute to poor Salmon returns. So the attitude is pretty prevalent that as long as they get to fish, I'm going to take all I can get too. We (all user groups) need to learn to be satisfied with a smaller piece of the pie, because the alternative is no one gets any. Seems lke a pretty simple choice, bonk fewer now, or maybe never have the opportunity in the future.

This topic always becomes an issue and everyone points the finger at everyone else. Were all to blame with this one. The commercial fleet, the natives, the sport fisherman, DFO and everyone else. Spring time you side with the commercial guys saying they have to brail and sort all their fish, I don't know about you but I've seen them do this in Milbanke sound and whale channel and I would say my little boy could release a big spring better then them.(I'm not saying they all do this.) The natives have to agree to leave the salmon alone once they enter their spawning rivers ( which sport anglers have to also. ) Net fishiers don't Target the fish your after, and any fish released after being in a net stands a low chance of survival, same when you see sportys net and release a fish. DFO has to wake up here and start to drop limits on fish and get rid of these slot limits of two over 1 under etc, this just means more fish being caught and released. You can't properlly police these limits and everyone knows it happens if your inside one of these slot limit areas and you bring in an over sized fish wheres it going. I would like to think released. As for the comment of I would like to see how many fish lodges take the % isn't like commercial. I always recomended releasing fish they don't need when I worked at the lodges, But I never handled the fish it was all done in the water and with the gaff. This whole subject about bonking big fish everyone knows it all comes down to bragging rights. Whats the difference in releasing the fish and getting a repilca made or bonking it.Somebody made a comment about every fish is the same if you bonk 15# or 60#, thats not true it all relates to genetics. Just like every other species and race. Why do hunting ranches cull out smaller bucks or bulls. We all sit here and complain every year about the fish stocks but nobody ever does anything to help. Oh yeah fish farms in the water have to go, land base them all. The old saying limt your catch don't catch your limit. So on the topic of bonk or not bonk now that I've done it once I would probally take pics, measurements and have a replica made. I would rather eat a 15# to 25# fish same as halibut 20# to 50# best eating. What's the reason we fish to get bragging rights or to eat fresh fish.
just my opinion.

First off, several of you missed my point. Also,I never said, shut down all commercial fishing.Further, those who are in favor of further limits placed on the sportfishing body, don't really understand about what really impacts the resource. The sportfishing body(particularly in BC)creates and sustains an economical component that the commercial fishery could not ever experience. Also, this same sportfishing body creates an awareness regarding the resource(through forums like this)that the commercial fleet won't/can't accomplish. When we discuss bonk/no bonk, that is a personal choice, pure and simple. Those that think I'm off base regarding the seine component of the commercial fishery and the impact that it can/has caused, need to look no further than here in BC.Please remember this, the sportfishing industry in BC,generates the biggest $/lb.,also has the least, probably immeasurable impact on the resource, while creating and sustaining more jobs and communities and plays a large part in habitat restoration, hatchery intervention and overall general awareness of the health of the resource.

A countless number of programs to help sustainability of the resource, came to fruition as a direct result of pressure from the sportfishing body and some of it's heavy hitters. This continues today,as long as the sportfishing component sounds long and strong, these programs will continue. How do some of you Island boys feel about the proposed closure of more of those smaller hatcheries?Makes me sick! So,when we talk about further restrictions to the sportfishing body,I start thinking about the changes/restrictions we've had to endure since the mid 70's.I feel that this body(sportfishers)has done more for the viability of the resource, while suffering concession after concession after concession.

The fishing today(good or bad),would not be what it even is now, without the sportfishing body.Impacts on the resource?Commercial fishing?YES!,Habitat degradation?YES!,Ocean survival conditions?YES!,Global warming?YES!,Fish farms?YES!,Sportfishing?NO CHANCE!

i think we need to stop commercial fishing of baitfish, herring, anchovies, pilchers etc. it all starts there.

Who cut out my post here from earlier today?

Am I being censored or what!

I demand an explanation.

Hi, littlehawk.

I've had that happen on other forums before, but never this one. That's very frustrating, no one likes to see censorship. As long as the post doesn't contain any personal attacks, we should be free to express our thoughts. Unfortunately, demanding anything isn't likely to get you what you want. I'm always glad to hear your opinion. You are a very conservation minded individual, who does more than just, talk the talk.

This is a quick ? that I don't think needs a thread(?).In my searching through past threads and posts I notice one viewers username as n/a. It also says deleted. I've read a few of his/hers comments and I'm wondering what the n/a and deleted means. Can someone explain this to me?

Cheers,Roy..

I would asume the member had his account revoked for violating the posting guidlines, I could be wrong.

Thanks GLG!

There I go... freakin'-out over nothing again. It's tough being over 50.
My memory sure ain't what it used to be.

I'm already censored on another popular sportfishing forum (related to my WSA anti-fishfarming stance) and I shuddered to think it had happened to me here as well. I've been trying to work on my manners.

This form - of the four I once frequented - has been far and away the most supportive.

Cheers,
Terry
