The man in the Grey suit

14 foot mature great white washed up dead just north of skidegate. Been awhile since anyone’s reported a sighting in our coast . Anyone here ever had an encounter ?
Not me personally, but I watched Jaws with my nephew and niece the night before we went fishing one time. What ever you do….dont yell shark when you see dolphins after watching it. They’ll probably never go fishing with me again.

A couple of years ago while on the barge to Skiddegate....the Alliford/skiddegate ferry was in for repairs....I saw what I think was a shark. It was in the evening and on the surface. I watched for a while and realized the odd thing was the dorsal fin with the tail sweeping back in forth. It slowly went west and disappeared. Could have been a salmon shark too I suppose. Pretty sure not a blue.

Had one beside the boat in Barkley 2 seasons ago. They are indeed large critters. Needless to say no one was really interested in reaching over the side to pick up the scotty clip to reset the gear.
You get 6 gill sharks coming up shallow in Barkley Sound too... those things get 20' long.

They come up a few places that are common for fishing - Swale Rock in Barkley Sound, Flora Islet near Hornby [where I've seen them when scuba diving], Tozer Rock near Mill Bay. Seem to be places where it comes up from really deep.

Offshore on the banks or in the sound?

Had a couple run ins with some Big Blue dogs on Big Bank this summer, there a few around for sure year. They were chasing our hooked cohoes we had on, pretty wild watching them trying to grab the fish and swimming around the boat.. :)

Out by Mara. Putting the gear in looking down directly at the water, myself and guest saw it right beside the boat. We both figure around 14 feet and looked like a really wide body healthy critter. Grey upper and white underbelly. It was about 2 feet under the surface so we didn't get the clearest look at the head. Also happened really quickly so we were both trying to process what we were seeing.

I've played with lots of blues, salmon sharks and 6 gills up close and personal. Never encountered anything like this.

My most suprising encounter with a shark was off Barkley many years ago. Big swells but no chop. I was heading out to 7mile in my 17.5 Hourston at a good clip when WHAM ! I hit something . I went into neutral and looked back. There was a salmon shark about 7-8 ft doing the funky chicken in my wash. Big gash in the head. As I watched it spiraled down trailing blood from a deep gash on its head ! Then I woke up and realized my 90hp Merc was sitting at weird angle on the transom. The impact had broken one side of the swivel bracket ! Oh Oh..... I gingerly tried putting the motor in gear. It still worked and limped back to Bamfield . When I got out of the water I found that the skeg was gone... and the gearcase had scratches through the paint. Somehow it missed the prop. That finished my trip quickly. I can only imaging the damage hitting a LARGE shark would do to a vessel.

Within a year or so after my moving to Sandspit in 1987, there were two dead great white sharks found washed up on different beaches up there.
IIRC, both on Graham Island, and one had a fresh dead seal in its stomach.

They are not confined to warm waters.

Take care.
