The boat survey said ....

After 14 years since launch of my 36' sailboat to which I have now retired living aboard sailing the coast year round my insurance company dropped me a line requesting a survey (after 14 years ). All was ok. The exception being the propane 2 burner cook stove. I did post (as below) to the hunting forum as I just happened to be tweaked by a post there. However, this forum of mostly boat owners seems as relevant. The following :

"I have retired to my fully insulated, wood stove heated sailboat launched 2006. Just recently after a marine survey, according to the insurance company I need to take out my 2 burner propane cook stove connected to 20 lb tank off stern railing and replace with a pile of new stuff including new stove. All of the stuff they want is far more dangerous in terms of malfunction than my copper tube link up from the galley to the tank. This has been flawless for 14 years. Accordingly, I am looking to replace it all with a portable camp stove and 1lb refillable bottle and to hell with the bureaucracy. For heavy going needs like venison stews, pastas etc I have my wood stove. I have a video up on my YT channel at the 4 to 5 minute mark you can see both stoves clearly as an idea of where I am going with my posting.... "
Just wondering if others on this forum have "simplified" in the face of insurance company bureaucracy.
... thanks

Personally I'd be looking for a different surveyor - I just went through roughly the same thing - 33' sailboat with a factory installed propane system (copper lines, dedicated tank locker) - it's a 1983 boat - so surveys every 5 yrs or so and NO issues - this last time, new surveyor and he "condems" the propane lines based on some vague reference to " various standards" - when pressed he wouldn't reference the exact standard - and when I went down the rabbit hole to find as long as it's installed correctly, there is no set lifespan - he then waffled even further and stamped his foot and said " that's my opinion and unless you can get a qualified "propane specialist" to certify, I'm not changing the report". So, given I've not ever had a claim I'm okay with signing the form that says "everything has been rectified" and in 5yrs time shopping for a different surveyor.

Mayday nailed it... The updating required was absurd in contrast to my 14 year copper line system tank to stainless USA made stove. Now they say I need a system with 5 more components (any one of which if defective or fail can be dangerous 5x more probability over my setup). I am in touch with a possible renewed Origo stove upgraded, rugged, stainless ...no tanks or add ons .. non explosive. I will post when I get full details.
