We've been discussing all the ways to set up salmon gear. There seems to be too many to count. How can we figure out what works, and what doesn't?

Well we could tie up one of those rig's, and troll it behind
your boat. If it catches fish, it works ! :D

really there isn't that many ways that are popular. Get yourself some flashers, anchovy rigs, spoons and hootchies and you've got the bases covered.

There are some critical details to follow that make a difference in being a consistant catcher. As for general rigs, PS is right, keep it simple and the rest comes simply with experience or following the example of someone experienced.

I have "lots" of red & green Hotspot flashers, anchovy specials, crippled anchovy and coyote spoons (for coho), if that tells you anything. I have a "few" plugs, but don't use them very often.

Most time I start out with a green Hotspot, 7-8' leader, and an anchovy special! Then adjust from there. Coyote's are good to run with a 42" leader down the center line about 100 yards back.

What are you targeting? If you're fishing springs be prepared to pay your dues to catch them consistently.Best bet is to buy the baitholders and start there,if your not sure about what roll to use go buy a Rhys Davis super strip holder and start there,it will roll for you all on its own.Dan

Get this, circa July,1986,Campbell River. Brother in law and me trolling from Quadra Island to the Big Rock boat site to get more live herring. Noon time, hot hot and out of beer. Hes trolling a Charlie White perch lure almost on top of the water. Bottom line 20 min later I netted his 31 lber. We went back to the camp site. You just never know. Moral of that story is dont get all caught up with how, when where and what, just go fish.

okay If you guys could have only three hootchie colors what would they be. cause you go to nitka or your favourite shop and there a hundreds of colors of them. then I would have no room for the wife and need a bigger boat ( hey wait a minute thats not that bad of an Idea) mmy favorite coyote spoon green and glow followed by cop car but hootchies I have no clue. as for leader lenght when I was a kid we uses 20" for springs and gold hootchies

The best setup from my point of veiw is to be in the right place at the right time! I've seen countless 10-12 lb salmon attack a release clip sitting beside the boat just drifting while still attached to the cannon ball! When you see that happen most anything you are trolling works well because the fish are aggressive. This also shows that flo green is a good colour in either spoon or hootchies as that colour is what attracted them to the release clip in the first place!

When trolling with a downrigger,I prefer to attach the flasher on to the ball or downrigger line, and have my lure only(no flasher)on a release clip above and behind the flasher.More fun playing fish.
I guess that makes me a ball flasher[8D]
