That's amazingWell finally tried black cod fishing. Although I am up in Alaska. Found a spot around 600’ that dropped off pretty quickly to 1000’ and drifted along the slope. Got one within 5 minutes of dropping down and it was a dandy.

Next drop in the same spot I thought I had hooked a halibut but it turned out to be a very large Short Raker.

Over a few drops I was able to land 4 black cod with them mostly between 8-10#’s. Using an electric reel was very helpful for bait checks. Used salmon bellies and squid as bait.
Hitting those 600' shelves, where it drops off into the abyss, seems to work for many on the Island also. That's amazing
any luck? Any by catch?I have been trying in the straight with salmon belly, an electric reel and 800-1400 feet of water and all I get is dogs. I am blown away these things live at these depth but excited to find some black cod!
Nope. Literally just Dogs. Every time I try I get excited. Dogs live everywhere down there!any luck? Any by catch?
Have you considered skipping the meat and running hardware of some kind?Nope. Literally just Dogs. Every time I try I get excited. Dogs live everywhere down there!

Yes I mean from the inside. Basically Nanaimo through French creek is where I have been trying. You are right about the dogs. I catch them as shallow as it gets and as deep. I will either have to fine a new spot, or a new rig to try for these things. When you say "in the strait" where is that? On the inside of the island?
I tried on the inside way up in channels at 2200'. Still at the depths it was immediate dog fish. There are so many around nothing else has a chance to get the bait.
I have done well for blackcod with this year being my best. But it has always been on the outside (westside).
If i recall dogfish migrate. Maybe during winter might be better?Yes I mean from the inside. Basically Nanaimo through French creek is where I have been trying. You are right about the dogs.
