Tales From The Tyee Pool......2012...

FISH ON!!!

But only briefly.

Bing, the Weighmaster at the clubhouse, had asked me if I'd mind rowing a young couple visiting from Los Angeles so I took them out tonite. Neither had ever fished this way nor much at all as it turned out so I did the standard patter with some demonstration and all that stuff before we headed out, as well as showing the guy how to run my outboard as he'd never run one before.
All went well and we got out and set up nicely falling into the pattern most everyone was on and on our second pass around and a bit away from the pack we had a solid strike and brief hookup on the gals's rod before it broke off.
I blamed the break-off on myself to make her feel less bad as she was stoked to actually hook something, even as briefly as it was, and felt she had screwed up badly when the line broke. A little white lie to save feelings isn't always a bad thing.
Fortunately my plug surfaced not far away so we retrieved it and carried on.
Nothing more for us but there were three undersized ones rowed tonite and a couple this morning too.
Still only one Tyee though so there's still much hope for better fishing to come.

Stay tuned and I'll be calling a couple of you guys tomorrow to set up some rowing dates now that some fish are here.

So we have a second Tyee for the year and it was captured by the young fellow pictured below, one Todd Campbell, a Junior angler and new member of the Tyee Club.

Damn kids anyways!! LOL

I'm told there were eight or more hook-ups last nite with two break-offs, two Tyee and four undersize.

Yep, I really should have been there yesterday. LOL

Just want to say GREAT THREAD DAVE!

Anything to help bring back attention to CR's world renowned rec-fishing history is fantastic.

Especially in these days full of salmon-farms and DFO ignorance...
 
Ok Dave, I'll let them know....we didn't get our name on the board, but the excitement of hearing those loud hollars of Fish On and the whooping out there in the last few moments of daylight were worth every second of us sitting there enjoying the sunset and you rowing your butt off :)

Can't wait to do it again!

I wonder what the fate was of that couple that disappeared off into the sunet, the current taking them way past Painters into the dark while line was still peeling out ??
 
Apparently it was Ladies Nite last nite as both Tyee registered came from the distaff side.
No pics as yet but Anita Painter caught her first ever and at 34 lbs not too shabby.
Not to be outdone one Ashley Campbell boated a 36 lb'er which was her first Tyee ever also.

I rowed like a maniac last night but only because I cleverly managed to position us on the edge of the bar where the current accelerates due to the shallowing water and the venturi effect. I thought we back-trolled rather nicely but in fact I could barely move us against the current and when I did the plugs bounced too erratically IMHO to be fishing effectively.
At one point we even motored back down the pool (way outside) but by the time I could row us back in we had been swept back to nearly our starting point.
Ah well, I'm learning every trip out so I take it in stride.

I'm rowing the next several nites in a row so hopefully one of my trusty rodholders will do me proud sooner or later.
Still a few of my site rowers to get out yet so hang in there.

In the meantime.......here's the poor couple themselves......toughing it out.

For whom the bell tolls??

Well tonite it tolled for my old pal Bert Wright, home for a brief spell from his normal summer working at Sandspit and now the newest member of the Tyee Club of BC.
Check the Tyee Club website tomorrow and there should be some photographic proof too.

I got a nifty hat for being a rookie rower, Bert got to ring the bell, buy a pin, pay his club dues now he's a member and then I made him clean the fish too.

It was 35 pounds and hooked within 75' of where we spent most of last nite, just off the bar at the north end of the pool and on the same plug we fished last nite. Tonite wasn't nearly as tough a row with the tides being later and all so I could move in and out of that area much easier.

I'm learning.

Congratulations!!


Been following the thread. Drove threw on the weekend and couldnt stop. Thinking about coming up this weekend. So many fishy places to be on the island these days!
 
Been busy in the pool the last couple of days for sure.
Yesterday morning saw two more registered and last nite another two, including a brother rowing his sister to a Tyee, and not her first one either.
I rowed my pal from Ontario last nite and really really wanted something for him as it was his birthday yesterday but alas.....nada.
Tomorrow I'm involved with some Canadian military veterans who are being hosted and rowed and stuff by the Tyee Club so looking forward to that.

As an aside, it's interesting that seven of the 11 Tyee now registered were caught by first-timers.

I know a couple of oldtimers who are all: "What the heck??" LOL

Anyway, once past this weekend I'll be calling a couple more of you guys. In the meantime.......
