Tablet computer

Thinking of buying a tablet computer, there's many different products out there now.
Whats the best value in the market right now and where to purchase ?

watch staples for the hp tablets I got 2 at $99 each a couple of weeks ago, however the tablets running droid operating systems have way more apps.

I think there was a thread just about this in the past couple of weeks RS?

As to the "value"......I had heard since HP is selling off it's PC/Tablet business that the HP tablets were available at very cheap prices; I heard finding them was the tricky part though. (I see as I was typing salmonkiller just mentioned this ;))

Seeing as there are rumours of an iPad 3 coming out in time for Xmas....if you were going to go the iPad route you may want to wait a bit until that announcement is made. The price of the iPad2 will inevitably drop one the anticipation of the "3" happens.

As with all technology......you're going to get a wide variety of differing opinions but IMHO the iPad is still the cream of the crop.

If I were you....I would go to a store where you can try a couple of them out as the O/S is what is going to be what YOU will be using. You want to find something that you find easy to navigate/use that seems to make sense.

If you're into loading tons of apps on it....then obviously the iPad is the way to go. If you're looking for something that you can load a few apps on.....browse the internet, check e-mail in a compact format....your options will be more varied. If there are particular apps you are looking for like Navionics for example; check their website and see what interfaces or O/S's they work with.

I am going to be getting one in the next while and will likely be going iPad. I don't need 10 million apps....but there are a few I am interested in (not taking pictures of my face and distorting it..haha) as well as browsing in a compact format that is easy to travel with.

One thing I would take a close look at and one of my reasons for going iPad is this. If MAJOR companies such as HP are selling off their PC AND tablet business....you have to look at it and think that they just don't think they can compete in that space anymore as Apple is owning the tablet business hands down. How many other players in the market are also going to throw in the towel as they just can't compete with Apple?

Most companies are making tablets....there are the popular ones such as Apple, Blackberry, HP, Sony....but a lot of the other "lesser known" manufacturers such as ASUS etc are making them as well. If you look at the only ones you hear anything about, they are the following.
  • Apple iPad
  • Blackberry Playbook
  • Samsung Galaxy
  • HP TouchPad (soon to be....<insert company name here>)
Someone will buy HP....Samsung is supposed to be a pretty good product.....and with all the woes that Blackberry is having, I am wondering when they may just throw in the towel and put their focus back into their smartphone business which is their bread and butter.

Portability is one the greatest features of a Ipad type tablet.
They become so much more conveniant when you have 3g instead of relying on a wifi connection.

I bought samsung galaxy and like it.navatronics cost 14bucks to down load. But battery lasts about two hours, I heard ipad lasts 10hrs that would be a big bonus.

I have an IPAD and would strongly suggest it to anyone. The battery life is longer than 2 hours, I would say probably around 6-9 hrs (mine is a yr old). Now that I have an IPAD I am barely on my PC. The only time Im on my PC is when I need to type out something longer than a paragraph or two as typing on the IPAD is a bit cumbersome, however you can get a keyboard for it. I have a couple young kids aged 3 and 5 who spend a fair amount of time playing all sorts of educational apps on it. The one downside is the pricetag, not sure what the other tablets go for.

Reviews look great, $399 at Staples
might just grab one !

Hey Scott , talk to millertime he has done mega research on these things before buying one. One of the things to consider is the type of GPS reciever it has if you are going to use it for boating. Some pads burn a lot of data minutes while some burn none.

Thanks Brian, don't think i'll be using on the boat.

Hey Guys.....just going to revive this thread for a question.

Anyone have experience with the Blackberry Playbook? The company I work for (we were bought by one of our "LARGE" Telco companies 2 years ago) is offering a deal at $200 off and then you can get a $100 prepaid Mastercard from RIM as well which brings the price of the 16GB down to $199.

I was wondering if anyone had some reviews or "pros/cons" of the BBerry version?

Cheers,

Scott

I heard today that the ipad is outselling the playbook 19 to 1

That would not surprise me at all.

I am just thinking for the price.....and all I want it for is checking e-mails/browsing etc while travelling that I may save myself a pile of $$$ and just get this one. I don't need a ton of apps....maybe the odd game to play while on the plane but that's it. Battery life is listed the same as the IPad....screen is slightly smaller, has a great camera on it....just thought I'd see if anyone had one?

Hey Guys...

Just thought I would throw it out there if any of you are interested in a Playbook for a pretty good deal...let me know today. (i'll check in and out til later this afternoon and then I'll be out until about 7pm)

Here is the breakdown if you are interested; (I think there can only be 3-4 more purchased using my credentials so it'll be first come first serve if there is interest)

http://ca.blackberry.com/playbook-tablet/

16GB is $299
32GB is $399
64GB is $499

These are all at a $200 savings off the retail price.....and if you order by the end of today September 22nd you can send your invoice dated today and the bar code from the packaging after filling out an online form to Blackberry and you get a prepaid $100 Mastercard. The only key with this "back to school" promo is you need to have a Blackberry to utilize the PIN from it in filling out the form. Bear in mind it doesn't have to personally be your Blackberry....it can be someone in your family etc but you just add the PIN in to the online form.

I just bought the 16GB as in the end it's gonna cost me $199 and I figured "what the hell".

If anyone wants to do this today I can send you an e-mail with my credentials to log on and shop online. A friend ordered one on Monday night and had it in her hands on Wednesday morning. (shipping is free too)

Three co-workers have purchased them thus far and are quite impressed....although smaller than an iPad it's pretty good for a cheap deal.

I just thought I would throw it out there if anyone was interested. (just so you know this isn't a scam...it's a promo through the Telco company that bought the company I work for; it's all completely legit and you are logging on to and purchasing through this company's team webstore using my credentials as that's how you access.) There are also accessories that you can purchase such as cases etc. It comes in a small neoprene sort of case but I ordered one of the folding cases that can act as a bit of a "stand" as well. It's only descriptions on the webstore so if you want to see more detail about the accessories you can see them on the Blackberry link further up; there are pics/descriptions.

Sounds like a great offer Pippen. I just wish that Navionics would work on the Playbook.

I much prefer BB over Iphone, RIM products just seem a lot better built.

Got an Ipod last Christmas so I could use it with Navionics for backup on the boat - worked great until last week when my son dropped it and the screen shattered.

You can get screens replaced for $50-75. Check craigslist
