I would give them a try, I switched to the square traps from some of the round commercial ones and find production has increased. Attach a line kiddy corner with a prawn clamp in the middle . Let us know how they work out

Which square traps murph? The netting is terrible for falling apart on the ones I have. :(

These are not square traps nore are they even close to falling apart. These traps unlike some of them poorly made square traps are built tuff. I think I could stand on them. These have an actual frame which is solid then it's wrapped in tight nylon mesh and secured in place with braided rope.

A buddy just gave me one of these traps. The design looks very productive. We fished it as the last trap on the string and it came up empty. It is quite light so I assume it needed a lot more wieght to keep it down. I like the design a lot and I plan to continue fishing it next to my commercial traps...

can we see the mystical square trap?, only have a small boat so i would like to purchase two to four productive prawntraps & a new puller... looking for some input, i am already sold on the square traps just would like to know which you believe to be the best products.

On the first post there are two links to the traps I am asking about with pictures.

Ok who has bought and used one of these? I bought a pair off another member a few months ago and have not given them a go yet.

Not sure if I am to weigh them down and where to attach a line to them. I understand they work really good.

Being that I already own 12 prawn traps not sure if I should give them a go or let them go.

A friend of mine showed up with those traps last year. They look good but caught next to nothing compared to other style traps we fish.
The round stacking commercial traps fish good but there are a few points to think about. When they are new the mesh is ridged and tight, and they fish well. The mesh is large so small prawns escape. Commercials can't keep them anyhow. After the mesh stretches even big ones get out. They also don't fish as well with loose mesh. That's the reason so many are sold each year. If you only want a few big prawns they are the way to go. If you want lots of prawns in a short soak consider the Bauer Sea Traps.

Interesting, kinda funny how some shape of trap's fish better then others, i found that with crab traps too, i had a real nice big round one with three doors i purchased for around 80$ and all my friends square $25 traps out fished it by a country mile, i hope those square one's will do alright , i have never prawned before so i wont have anything to compare them with until i get a couple round ones too. thanks for the advice i like the looks of the 24" square trap you mentioned too..time will tell i guess..lots to learn..:)

Bauer sea traps were the square ones I was talking about, they have been out producing my round commercial ones big time. My point to FA was I was always sceptic all if switching over from commercial style as you would think they would be the best hands down. That being said my commercial ones are getting old and may be stretched.

Big thanks to the Fish Assassin for hooking me up with a deal on the swedish prawntraps n a 600' shot of rope..with any luck i should be able to get a few prawns anyways..

If you get your traps thru Ladner direct they will put small mesh on a comm trap for rec guys...at least they did for mine. Regardless of how neatly they stack, if guys who make a living prawning use them in my opinion they would be the most effective trap. When square traps outfish round commercial traps I consider it to be another variable, other than the trap itself that is producing results.
In many situations I am fishing 4 or 5 crab pots in very close proximity, say no more than 50-60 yards apart (for the reason I'm lazy and like to keep the pots close...lol) and more often then not, only two of the pots consistantly catch, where the other 3 are near empty. Does one trap work better than the other? No. Are they baited the same? Yup. So what could it be other than location location location. They will go to the scent that is closest.

It all boils down to where the intended catch is holding and which scent trail is reaching that group of crab/prawns.

In short the square trap is closest to the catch in scenarios of better results IMO. Whatever food is first in line gets the lions share.

Well i was able to put them to the test last night off nanaimo two traps 350' ledge 2.5 hour soak.. about 15 prawns, threw 5 back because they were small, i think had they soaked all day i might have done ok ,Also the commie boat were all over the place going to try somewhere else next and add two more traps, had fun doing it.

Just started this year but 2 1/2 hour soak has been fine for me. I keep my traps in sight (binocular) and would be leery of leaving them overnight.

Ya it's a big ocean and i trust nobody..i am going to add two more Bauer Sea Traps to my line, then i am fishing the maximum allowed , at almost 500 bucks i am not letting it out of my sight.. prawning aint to hot right now as the commie boats are hitting it hard, going to try near ladysmith /chemanis area next

I've been out 3 times now trying out my new square trap. I've strung it with a round commercial style trap and each of the three times it's yielded zero prawns where the round trap still caught a decent number. Didn't matter what order I put the traps on the line, and the bait is always the same. I'll figure these things out though, whether they need a weight attached to them or a different kind of bait container. I want these square traps to work, they fit better on my boat.

haha the swedish trap....after a few pulls, doubling bait, and weighting it with 6 pounds on the trap alone....she finally yielded some prawns. 5 to be exact. luckily, the rest are round traps and I did just fine.

Swedish Prawn Trap for sale......

I added scotty vented bait jars to my swedish traps , the baitsacks in them are too big of mesh, most of your bait would be washed out before they hit the sea floor..., i think these traps will fish fine provided i am in good prawn fishing grounds.
