Surf Fishing around Tofino

Since I have no boat but want to do some west coast fishing, I was thinking to chunk some bait out around the Long Beach area this week.

Anyone got the lastest scoop on what to expect?

ya long beach isn't going to work - you'd need to cast about a KM to get into 20' of water. Probably get some cod off some rockie areas around uki?

If you're not dissuaded from surf fishing long beach it can be very good for surf perch and the odd flounder. Focus on areas adjacent to rocky headlands and points or deeper channels if you can see them (polarized sun glasses and look for the darker water). I find the incoming tide best. Cast out as far as you can without flinging your bait off or tangling. Use just enough weight so that the incoming waves slowly push your bait towards you a foot or two each wave and pick up the slack with your reel so your line is not slack but not so tight you pull the bait/weight along. A disc weight or pyramid weight is best 1.5 to 3 ounces. Run your main line to a three way swivel with your leader off one and line to weight off the other. Line to the weight should be 6-12" longer so the bait is just off bottom. For bait clam necks are hardy and work well but anything similar will work. Surf perch don't have huge mouths so a #6 or #4 hook is plenty. I also fly fish with small closers - can be a blast when you get into a school but impossible during tourist season cuz too many folks walking through your backcast - lol!!!

I was thinking to yak out my gear on a dead low and wait for the incoming tide. Being new to this area, I really don't know where to surf or shore fish so if somewhere else is better, please do share the 411.

Taking a charter is out of my financial ability, even a half day. Otherwise, yes, I would be on one.

Later starting in July you can get some small Cohos casting from the rocks off Tonquin or MacKenzies beaches but that's all i know about any success casting from shore in our area. The water is just really shallow everywhere.

I have tried casting from the rocks between long beach and tofino many times on surf trips ... we caught a mackerel once in el nino year, but that's it. Fun way to spend a few hours, very low probability of catching anything.

Canadian Princess in Ucluelet will get you out on the big boats for under $200 for a half day. The fishing is a big haywire, with 25 people jigging 3 feet apart, but they do get into fish on the banks, both salmon and halibut. And it's a nice boat ride ... as long as seas aren't too rough (there's a reason they call them "puker boats" ;-)
