Support your local hatchery!

You know said it before and will keep on saying it we should have a booth at these big derbies we do and have a donation box for 2 things

1. Money towards the hatcheries in our area take for instance the juan de fuca derby there is over 700 people there just imagine 10 or 20 bucks a person to go to sooke, goldstream, nitnat, and the suan juan hatcheries.

2. collect money to get a lawyer or someone who is an avid fisherperson who is a lawyer to help fight dfo and there closing of our right to fish!!!!!!!!!!!

Can everyone remember our winter springs getting closed and our halibut season closing and reductions implememnted IT WILL happen again this season guys but I think it will be worse get ready they will hit us hard this year!!!!!!

Yes trev but it goes to the PSS and then it goes to whatever or whoever it want I am saying the proceeds stays home in our own backyard not where we have no clue as to where it goes.

Every lodge on the coast has to report and there are creal surveyors at just about every marina. They have a good idea.
Chris73 i think that was200,001 lbs just jokin lol kinda.

We are supposed to report:D:D:D????????REALLY I dont think that has happened before at alot of the lodges LOL LOL.

As for them creel people told them long time ago that I dont want to talk to them and never bug me now, personally think it is a huge waste of time and money, they asked us about 5 years ago to "help" as we were the only ones in knight inlet at the time so we spend countless hours taking a scale sample and a cheek sample, keeping all the hatchery heads etc etc etc etc. and documenting EVERY fish as they wanted to net knight inlet but if we provided all this info that was going to be shared with us they we not going to net that year so of course we did it.

Only to be told that all that info we provided was for not as they ran out of funding so we did not get any info as the origin of the fish we were catching and all that work was in vain. very very sad!!!!!!!!!:(:(:([V][V][V]

That's a drag to hear of the halibut situation. Although last winter was doom and gloom for the regs starting this time of year, and then it turned out not to be too bad in the end. So I'm hoping for the best.

For salmon, the doom and gloom started with the poor river returns and the SSES cancelling their 2008 derby. While the fishing in Sooke was spotty this year, the Sooke River returns were excellent. So I wonder if the derby is back on? That's a key fundraiser, because the funds go direct to Sooke salmon, not to Pacific Salmon Foundation, to be divvied up around the province. From what I recall, the SSES derby started because of Bite Me changing their donation from local to the general fund.

So...bringing this topic back...hatcheries run on volunteers and donations. They are NOT DFO/government funded, so it's grassroots all the way (which seems crazy to me, for a multimillion dollar industry, as well as ecology, but that's another topic). The one benefit of it being grassroots, is it means WE and YOU can make a big difference -- this isn't about squabbling between an ignorant/uncaring big bad government, commercial overfishing, First Nations rights, etc. It's about doing what you can personally to help bring salmon back and keep them there in YOUR local river. Get down to your local hatchery and donate a few hours of your time...I guarantee they can use the help. (and if Sooke is any indication, they need some young blood! :) )

And if you can't spare the time, then cut them a cheque, because that will help too.

There's so many causes that have their hands out these days, but this is one that just feels right if you love fishing...your work and money has a direct influence on your own fun, plus it preserves the fun for your kids and grandkids. If you have a troubled conscience about taking fish in these troubled times, then this is a perfect karma repayment!

Sorry for the sermon, I'm a recent convert...just suddenly makes perfect sense, rather than worrying about it or complaining about it, feels good to just do something immediately useful, contributing to a solution.

John you can send me an email and I would love to help out in the volunteer basis if for nothing other than to see how the whole process works and to help out with my new community.

If someone wants to organize it... there are a fair number of members on this site. I would have no problem with a small donation.
How about $20 per member donated directly to sooke hatchery?

I also would be happy to donate a day of my time if there was a need for a work party on the river?

(sorry don't have time to be the organizer)

Tips

I would like to do my share and contribute to this needed cause.Who do I make the cheque out to? Would it be for the hatchery I choose? Guess I could just # and they will tell me.

For the Sooke Hatchery: check out the following website, it has a link to donation: www.sookesalmonenhancementsociety.com Leave a comment that you are from the Sportfishing BC Forum so they can see what is happening if a few of you guys chip in... The Sooke Salmon Enhancement indeed needs often manpower. Right now it is taking care of the eggs (springs). Soon they will collect coho broodstock. Then steelhead. The most they need help is early in the new year feeding the little fish several times a day. So whoever is close to Sooke would be needed then...

I don't live close to Sooke to volenteer but will send my donation to them.thanks

Hey, that'd be fun, a sportfishingbcforum work party...put a face to the login name...I'm sure SSES could use the help.

To join SSES: http://www.sookesalmonenhancementsociety.com/members.html

To donate to SSES: http://www.sookesalmonenhancementsociety.com/donate.html [they take credit cards on their website, using paypal]

And if you're not in Sooke, go here and find your local hatchery!

I didn't know sportfishing was a right? I thought sportfishing was a privilege? You make it sound like you have laws to protect your useage.[8)]

Take only what you need.

Fish assassin do you remember what happened last year with winter springs and the halibut????
Chris bos who defended us in every aspect For sportfishing he did tiresome hours to defend SPORT FISHING!!! and he is the voice behind the: "SPORT FISHING ADVISORY BOARD" (SFAB)

We all have a right to fish we all put money into it we all pay taxes, liscence fees, salmon stamps etc if it wasnt for YOU and I and everyone on the forum here!!!!! We wouldnt have fishing at all do you want to loose your right to go fishing???I dont think so, as we all love to do and go out in the outdoors to have fun.

It has nothing to do for my usage at all as a charter operator I am just like you too I like to go sportfishing dont get to do it as often as I want but s%&t happens LOL, I think you underestimate how important we all are to fishing we all create jobs and economy for our communities and cities and this province we call home.

What I am talking about is we need more of a voice to protect what we cherish " Fishing "</u> thats all.

Thanks Wolf

I get your point Wolf, but the fact that you think you have a "RIGHT" to fish, is what I am questioning. I just don't want your priviledge and my "rights" confused in any way. With all due respect to Mr Bos, He was put there by DFo simply to take care of their obligation of consultaion. I know all to well how the advisory boards work, As I was previously a member of HIAB (Herring Industry Advisory Board) I'm sure that Chris gave a very compeling and heartfilled presentaion on behalf of the sport fishing people, but as soon as he was done speaking it was business as usual Ie: setting restrictions on Sport fishermen and establishing commercial quotas. It is almost better not to send someone to thoose meetings and have more of a general meeting that DFO attend where the average Joe could tell DFO what he thinks of their ideas and invite the press!!

Perhaps we should look at it in a bigger picture. The natives and the sportfishermen basicly all want the same thing believe it or not, our goals are very similar. Both groups want to see the salmon stocks rebuilt in our rivers. It sure makes DFO's job a lot easier if we stand around on the docks and blame each other for declining stocks while the commercial boats go out and clean up what fish are left. I think that we could get alot accomplished if we worked together towards common goals, and perhaps form a society dedicated to rebuilding the salmon stocks in our local rivers. One that incorperates the needs of both groups. Of course that would require mutual respect, I think that both sides would need to put away there bad feelings for each other and look at the big picture and see that we could help the salmon more by working together. For the sake of the salmon I hope that both sides are ready for such an undertaking. I would like to think that we can all be on the same page when it comes to Salmon Restoration.

I love the idea of raising some money for salmon enhancement. In fact I would even consider co-ordinateing something if there is enough interest here? I know I could donate something to an auction. With the funds going towards Salmon Enhancement, maybe each year we could pick a different Hatchery to help out? Or perhaps we could look at buying our own hatchery with the proceeds of our fundraising? I have seen first hand that there are some portable hatcheries on the market, Maybe we could move it each year to a different river to help it out a bit. I can just imagine the red tape involved. But I would like to do something.

Take only what you need.

It's this kind of comment that causes bad blood between user groups:(
